There are lots of ways to teach yourself Spanish. Most are practical but some are pretty extreme. You could move to Mexico or Spain for a year and learn “trial by fire”. I know one young man who did just that and you bet he learned in a hurry. You could take private lessons or hire a tutor but this would be very expensive. You could take a class at your local college. This takes more of a time commitment and can’t be done at your own pace.

Need help with languages?

I wish to learn French and happen to contact a lady in my neighbourhood who has been teaching the language for over 20 years. She claims to teach conversational french in 50 hours. Is it possible for a complete greenhorn to even pick up the basics (i.e pronunciation, grammer, sentence construction etc) in such short span of time. (would like to believe my knowledge of english is excellent)

She has also stated that the process would involve a lot of learning by rote which is something i normally detest since it so very mechanical.

How effective is the use of audio CDs containing learning material ? or must one necessarily go to an instructor?

Lastly BTW, which one is easier to learn and master? French or Spanish?

She’s oversimplifying it. Maybe you can learn the basics in 50 hours, but you cannot be taken to a conversational level, not only in French, but in any language.
Instructors are valuable in language learning. It’s only people with certain experience that can learn alone, but even they need conversation practice and instruction.
Spanish is easier than French. I’ve been learning both, and I find Spanish far easier.

The Council of Europe calculates that it takes around 350-400 learning hours to reach CEF Level B1 – Threshhold Level (= Higher GCSE), i.e around 80 hours per year over 5 years.

http://www.dfes.gov.uk/languages/DSP_languagesladder.cfm

There is some evidence that, with adequate guidance, absolute beginners need an average of c. 375 learning
hours – including independent work – to reach the older objective.” (p. 6 of this 252-page publication: ISBN 92-871-2003-X)

If anybody thinks that B1 Threshold Level (Higher GCSE) can be achieved with fewer learning hours then they must be a lot cleverer than kids in the rest of the UK and the rest of Europe.

Rocket Language is arguably the top language software developer in the world. Only Rosetta Stone can offer any argument to this fact. Both products have loyal followings, but offer radically different methods on how to Learn To Speak Spanish.
