No; in those days church and state were tied as one with God on top, followed by the King and all the way down to peasants on that pyramid or chain of life philosophy. The Reformers and others who started all the changes were as clear and present a danger to the fabric of that society as commies, fascists and Islamic Fundamentalists are to us today. The situation was reacted to accordingly the loss of life, even the innocent.
