Help Your Child Learn Spanish
You may have heard the many benefits of having your child learn another language, especially Spanish. Have you ever wondered why it’s so important for you to help your child learn Spanish?
First of all, the clearest reason is that we no longer live in an isolated society but a global one. Even in small towns that may feel remote, there is almost always a Spanish-speaking population contributing to the culture and workforce. There are probably several children at your child’s school, perhaps even in his own class, whose primary language is Spanish. Encouraging your child to speak Spanish will better equip him to communicate with those children as well as other Spanish-speaking people he will undoubtedly meet as he becomes older.
Secondly, studies have shown over and over being bilingual is very beneficial to children’s cognitive development. In her book Raising Bilingual Children (Mars Publishing, 2003), Carey Miles writes that “Bilingualism has been linked to a variety of positive cognitive benefits, including early reading, improved problem-solving skills, and higher scores on the SATs, including the math section.” Children who are fluent in two (or several) languages will probably have more employment opportunities once they graduate and begin the process of looking for a job
Another reason is the sheer joy of speaking a second language well. Not only is it fun to practice and use, it opens up possibilities of traveling to or living in another country where Spanish is spoken. A teenager who has been brought up Speaking Spanish will have no hesitation in joining an exchange program or similar learning opportunity, which can be an experience that may change his or her life. Regardless of what your reason is for helping your child learn Spanish, you need to know where to get started. We’ve come up with some easy steps you can take to introduce and instill a love of Spanish in your child.
Learn together
You won’t be very successful in teaching your child Spanish if you don’t know any yourself. If Spanish is completely new to you, view this as the perfect opportunity to expand your own knowledge and skills. All children learn better when their parents are active participants in what they’re learning. Who knows! You may be surprised at how fast and well you can learn to speak another language.
Read, read, read!
Reading is, of course, one of the best forms of learning. Simple children’s books that have been translated into Spanish can make a big impression on your child. One of the things that children do best is associating the pictures they’re looking at with what they’re hearing. There are many well-read and well-loved books, such as Curious George and Dr. Seuss books, that can be found in a Spanish version. Try finding a book that your child is familiar with in English so that he already knows the words. Alternatively, read a book in English to your child then read the same book in Spanish immediately afterwards.
Incorporate playing games
Children learn many things through playing games. Spanish is no different. They won’t even know they are learning! There is a variety of well-known games, such as Monopoly and Operation, available in Spanish. Some Spanish-learning software programs include different vocabulary and knowledge games as well.
Take advantage of the computer
Children today spend a lot of time on the computer and are therefore very comfortable with using it. Find a good software package that has different components designed to help your child Learn Spanish In an enjoyable way. The benefit of software over just books or CDs is that it can be very multi-faceted in its learning tools. Games, lessons, audio files, text, quizzes, and other resources can be kept in one place and used one at a time or several at a time, as needed.

Shouldn’t these immigrants learn english and not come to a country illegally and expect everyone to speak to them in their native language instead of bothering to learn the native language of the country that they have immigrated into?

I could have never believed in a million years that we would be swearing in a president with the name Hussein, the name of a terrorist who killed so many. It just boggles my mind. and scares me too. Who knows what Obama would do if elected because, who knows Obama? He hasn’t been around long enough. All of the questions they ask about Sarah Palin…who is she? how has she earned this right to be elected VP? What experience does she have? Can be asked about Obama too, but he is given a free pass by the media on this. And Sarah Palin is not even running for President. Where is the questioning of Biden? he is being given a free pass too.
Why are we giving a pass to these men who are vaguely dishonorable? Biden lied! He plagiarized. We hear nothing of this.
It makes me sick inside.
