Question for Multilingual Speakers….How long did it take you to learn (& master) a second language?
I’m 18 and have taken 3 years of spanish. I would like to be fluent in spanish and be able to have a full conversation with a native speaker. I was curious as to how long it usually takes for someone to learn a second language and also what techniques I should use to master a language.
Also, are there any recommended books, cds, etc. for Learning Spanish?
Any multi lingual person will tell you, the best way to really learn another language is to be in the country that speaks that language, for a while.
I had 8.5 years of school english under my belt, when I moved to the US from Germany.. Even then, my english speaking skills were not great. Nothing taught me more than actually going out and speaking to people, in english. You can learn all the grammar you want, nothing is as good as having to use your new language every day.
I was pregnant when we moved. When I had minor pregnancy issues nothing was as good as my telling the doctor myself that ‘I could not see my feet anymore.’
So, if you can go to Spain or Mexico and live there for a while, that’s the way to go for you. Good luck.
