In Spanish, why is the expression como te fue used instead of como te fuiste? Also why me dieron ganas de?

The expression como te fue confuses me when I am learning spanish. Como te fue should not be a phrase because the reflexive pronoun te is to be used with the tu- form of ser, which is fuiste.

However, throughout my Holt Expresate Spanish 2 book, it says como te fue everywhere without explaining why so.

Additionaly, throuhgout the book it has the phrase “me dieron ganas de llorar”. If infact this was a technically correct phrase would it not be “me dio ganas de llorar”?

Thanks in advance

In response to your first question:

The te is not reflexive here, since it is not a case of subject and object being the same. This is an impersonal use of ser, and what I would say is ‘te’ as an indirect object. So you have ‘How was it, how did it go for you?’ ‘It’ here is similar to ‘It happened’ or ‘It’s raining’–’it,’ the 3p singular subject of the verb ser, is being used impersonally, more or less abstractly.

You would only use the 2nd personal singular if ‘you’ were the subject of the verb. For example, with many of the verbs involving personal hygiene, like banyarse. Te banyas=You bathe (yourself). The subject, you, is both doing and receiving the action of the bathing.

In response to your second question:

It depends upon the doer of the action(subject of the verb). If it’s one person, it would be dio, which is 3p singular (he/she/it made me feel), but if it’s a group it would be dieron, 3p plural (they made me feel….).
