Spanish is probably the most popular foreign language to learn for English Speakers for many reasons. One of which is not that it is an easy language to learn! Unfortunately, many are unaware just how tough Learning Spanish can be and this naivety often leads to them giving up when things start to become difficult. The first point that should be taken on board is that learning Spanish is a long term commitment and will be difficult at times, so be prepared for that. The second point is that the first real stumbling block many students have is learning Spanish verb conjugation.
It is difficult to find any similarities between the structure of English and Spanish Verbs. English verbs change little when conjugated with the exception of the 3rd person singular which has an s or es added to the end of the verb. E.g. I, you, we and they change and the 3rd person singular is he or she changes. Not everything is plain sailing however as there are some notable exceptions to this rule such as the verb to have but in general the formation of verbs in English is quite simple.
In comparison, Spanish verbs are conjugated in such a way that many people struggle with the number of variations that are encountered as each ‘person’ has a different ending. If we use the verb comprar (to buy) as an example it would go something like this: compro (I buy), compras (you buy), compra (he, she buys and you (polite) buy), compramos (we buy), compráis (you buy, or rather, you all buy as it is plural), compran (they or you (polite plural) buy).
It should also be noted that the example used above is that of a regular ar verb, there are also two other verb types that have different endings and they are the group of verbs that end in er and ir, comer (to eat) and vivir (to live) for example. Add to that the fact that many of the most commonly used verbs in Spanish are irregular, meaning they do not follow the regular verb patterns, and then there is the little matter of learning how reflexive verbs work. Put this all together and you will then start to see the issue that many students struggle with.
The many different combinations experienced with Spanish verbs may seem overwhelming at first but learning them is a necessary part of mastering Spanish, and hundreds of thousands of people have successfully navigated this minefield by using a good Spanish verb conjugator. It should be noted that the study of Spanish conjugation has become much simpler and faster now-a-days thanks to the rapid and dramatic growth of the computer as an educational tool. No longer are students reliant on the conventional verb conjugation table books as they are being replaced by software that has been designed to do the specific job of teaching conjugation. These software programs provide interactive study, successfully speeds up learning and makes the whole process much more enjoyable.
