The United States has produced many television evangelists and Benny Hinn is one of the more well known ones. He has a loyal core of followers and has attracted controversy and detractors too. His charismatic stage presence and merchandising skill has given him a high profile. Here are ten simple ways you can easily introduce your child to the Spanish language, which are both fun and easy to do:

1. Find Spanish language recordings for children in the library. There are lots of helpful books available. Check out the works of Spanish-speaking, bilingual children’s singer-composers. Songs introducing colors, body parts, animals, days of the week, etc. are especially helpful.

2. Tape large labels of Spanish Words around the house: “elespejo” on the mirror, “la puerta” on the door, etc.

3. Watch children’s television shows in Spanish.

4. Select Spanish Subtitles while watching TV.

5. For instant vocabulary, look for lists on the Internet of Spanish/English cognates (e.g. “nation” = nación; “civilization,” civilización, etc.) Forty percent of the words in Spanish and English are derived from the same Latin roots.

6. Use online dictionaries. You can type in words in English or Spanish for good translations. Also, use the pronunciation feature.

7. Take your pre-school child to bilingual story hours at your public library.

8. Take your child to a Latino grocery store and explore the names of tasty foods and snacks.

9. Switch the language to Spanish when watching a familiar DVD. Since you already know what’s going to happen you can concentrate on the foreign words.

10. Tune your car radio to a Spanish station and let your child try to understand a word here and there. It’s all about getting used to the sounds and cadence of another language.

As you can see teaching your child Spanish can be an adventure and is a wonderful way to help them learn a new language.

Should I learn one language at a time or could I easily learn both at the same time, without getting confused?

Though many educators don’t agree – I will tell you from experience that the only effective way to learn a language is through immersion. That is, go somewhere that the language is spoken and be forced into learning it.

If you really want to use some technology, I’ve found the Rosetta Stone software to be helpful. But, nothing is more effective than going where it is spoken and learning it.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Integration Methods: IM, eConnect, Dexterity

Formerly this mid-market Corporate ERP application was known as Great Plains Dynamics and eEnterprise.  In this small publication we would like to review advanced integration options, available in Dynamics GP Integration Manager, eConnect, as well as custom integration programming in Great Plains Dexterity.  Plus, we will try to address options for older versions of Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL 2000/Btrieve and Ctree.  Please, note that Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Mac is technically predecessor of Great Plains Dynamics for Windows and Macintosh, however GPA business logic and interface are different from Dynamics core functionality: GL, PM, RM, SOP, POP, Inventory Management.  GPA is out of scope for this article (where we would like to make several observations)

1. Integration Manager.  We understand that most of Great Plains Technical Consultants know how to setup simple integration, where the source are text tab or comma delimited files, including building document header by grouping text lines (by document date for example: General Ledger Transaction, Sales Order Processing Invoice, etc.).  However, we saw pretty tough situations, where Dynamics GP integration consultants had hard time in complex data conversions, where transactions and master records are in SQL tables or ODBC compliant databases: Oracle, MS Access, Pervasive SQL/Btrieve, Ctree, MySQL, or when they are exported into very complex text files (where you have to weed out formatting lines, as reports are exported in human readable format, which is not something that text integration accepts without data massage).  Good advice in our opinion in such scenarios is to import these text files into MS Excel, weed out formatting lines and then import the data into staging MS SQL Server tables.  Then you create SQL View to pull data from staging tables and use it as a base for Advanced ODBC Data Source.  We had cases, where we were able to import up to the whole year of mid-size company GL transactions via that method.  We would like also to share IM ongoing and close to real time integration methodic via Integration Manager.  If you have in-house programmed ecommerce website application, which requires close to real time or batch mode integration to Sales Order Processing (customer orders, invoices and returns) and new customers creation (where transactions are coming from Linux/PHP/MySQL based ecommerce application) – consider either exporting transactions in text file or even establishing ODBC connection from Dynamics GP hosting MS SQL Server to MySQL via Linked Server mechanism, and schedule IM Integration to run every 20 min or few hours via Windows Macro third party add-ons.  We know that for some of you these complex technical passages might be too deep, but our mission here is to let you (as struggling ecommerce programmer) know what is possible with Dynamics GP ecommerce integration.  And finally, the last observation, before we move on to eConnect technology, please know that IM for GP version 10.0 is available in two connection blends – traditional OLE Server and eConnect connectors.  eConnect connectors are faster by their technology architecture and technically you may be achieving the same results as if you are programming eConnect directly from your ecommerce web application, where the advantage of Integration Manager is apparent – it is user friendly in integration design and doesn’t require programming (except simple VBA scripts, or data translation tables, which could be composed in MS Excel)

2. eConnect Integration Programming.  eConnect was introduced for Dynamics GP version 7.5 and 8.0 as the Software Development Kit, initially dedicated to eCommerce software developers.  eConnect was under certain evolution for Dynamics GP versions 9.0 and 10.0, where it was adopted as integration technical platform strategy (and it was announced by Microsoft Business Solutions that eConnect should replace earlier integration platforms: Integration Manager, Dexterity – as middle tier).  And now as we are writing these lines (October 2009), eConnect is triumphing among Dynamics GP integration low level technologies and connectors.  eConnect technology is in fact simple – it is the collection of SQL Server encrypted stored procedures, replicating Great Plains Dexterity Dynamics GP business logic (often in Object Oriented Programming style, and this is good improvement to Dex, which is not technically Object Oriented Programming compliant with some exceptions).  In our opinion eConnect came to its maturity as reliable Dynamics GP ecommerce and generic integration Software Development Kit with Great Plains Dynamics GP version 10.0 and probably 9.0.  If you got certifications and experience as Microsoft  .Net VB or C# programmer, you should find very useful code samples and prototype Microsoft Visual Studio eConnect projects: Dynamics GP Sales Order import, Customer import and update (including addresses) to give you start up ideas

3. Dexterity integrations.  Dex is capable to do the ultimate and the most complex programming surgery in Dynamics GP system environment.  If Integration Manager and even eConnect don’t do the job or incapable to do the job (and this is possible as these tools have natural limitations).  However, please recognize the challenges of Dexterity.   In Dynamics GP realm there are no limits to Microsoft Dexterity customizations, and if you contact with Great Plains Dexterity programmers (who have access to Dexterity Source Code and have experience in Dex source code programming), please go ahead to evaluate these channels.  The only advise we would like to feature here is fact that Dexterity requires too long learning curve for newcomers, and it is not recommended for small or mid-size companies IT department to do Dexterity custom programming inhouse

4. Direct SQL Data Feeding.  If you are experienced Microsoft SQL DBA, please review Dynamics GP Tables Structure Tools->Resource Description->Tables (or install Dynamics GP SDK from DC#2, where tables structure is formally documented).  We would like to make comments and recommendations, before you try direct SQL data feed via SQL Stored Procedures.  Please, consider the fact that eConnect is already doing this job via its methods and Stored Procedures.  Also take into consideration the fact that Dynamics GP business logic and data flow is quite complex and it is unlikely that you can do imitate this logic in couple of day, couple of week or even in couple of months.  If you have unlimited IT budget, then please disregard and go all the way through until you consider yourself experienced eConnect programmer with comfort to send records directly to Dynamics GP tables: GL10000, GL10001, SOP10100, SOP10200, SOP30200, SOP30300,etc.

5. Great Plains Integration options for Old GP versions: 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.0 and Great Plains Dynamics on Pervasive SQL Server 2000/Btrieve and Ctree.  If you are on archaic version, it is unlikely that you can get support directly from Microsoft Business Solutions Dynamics GP subdivision (as you are likely not current in MBS annual enhancement program)

6. my 21 month old is bilingual..?

ok my husband, daughter and i live with my in-laws, they only speak spanish, my husband speaks both english and spnish very well, I on the other hand can only speak english, my 21 month old daughter speaks lots of spanish, she has a few words that she can say in english but when she talks or ask for things like tryn’ to tell me what she wants, she dose it all in spanish, i don’t want to get after her for talkn’ to me in spanish i know that she is to young to understand that mommy only speaks english and dose not understand spanish, and i am very glad that she will grow up known’ both, but is there something that i can do to help her learn english better before she goes to school. the only time she hears english is when her father and i talk or when i go to see my family, other then that every thing is spanish… she is also startn’ to call me tia mac like my niece and nephews.. and she only is around them maybe like once a month.. any help on what i can do? thanks so much…

I’m in the same situation, but my daughter is not born yet. My in laws speak Italian and we will be moving to an Italian community where everyone speaks Italian, so I decided unless I want to be on the outside (of my own family) then I will learn Italian too. My husband told me he is on only speaking Italian to the baby, I figure it will teach us both. I’ve also been teaching myself with Italian CD’s and computer programs. Sometimes a guitar player will make up his own finger picking techniques as an ad hoc measure to get a solo or accompaniment to sound good, but there’s always the need to know the basic principles behind finger picking guitar styles.

There are many different finger picking techniques like classical, Travis Picking, chord melody and flamenco. One way to get into finger picking is to get hold of a book or DVD by one of the authorities on the subject. Mark Hanson is always mentioned as a great finger style guitar player and teacher, as is Al Petteway. Pete Huttlinger has put out a info-packed DVD called Essential Exercises for Finger style Guitar. Happy Traum also has a great deal of teaching material for finger pickers on Homespun Tapes.

Unfortunately, no one finger picking style will give you a real introduction to all styles. Fortunately, you do not need to know a great range of playing styles to give you a general understanding of playing using the right hand fingers. As an example, a folk guitar player with some experience with finger picking patterns and scales will be able to play some pieces from the classical guitar repertoire but he won’t necessarily sound much like a classical guitarist.

Some guitarists who have played using a plectrum are discouraged by the difficulty of trying to coordinate the thumb and fingers. The key to getting the fingers and thumb working as independent units is slow practice. Really slow. Put your metronome on a very low setting and play the bass notes of the chords, only adding an incidental note with the first finger when you are feeling confident.

Another question guitar players have about beginning finger picking guitar is on the choice of songs to learn. My advice is that there is no need to be too ambitious. Choose a song that is maybe a little below your technical standard and start with strumming the chords until you have the feel of playing along to the lyrics.

Once you have the general rhythm of the song, grab a finger picking pattern in the correct time signature from a guitar tutor or a free guitar lesson website and apply it to your song. The House Of The Rising Sun as played by The Animals is a good song for a beginner finger picking guitar player as is Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton. More Than Words by Extreme is another good, simple song, and when you are feeling more ambitious, go onto Stairway To Heaven. To give you a challenge for your left hand, look for tabs and YouTube video lessons on a classical guitar piece called The Anonymous Romance or Spanish Romance.

Born on 30 March 1945, Eric Clapton Patrick is basically an English blues-rock guitarist. He is also a renowned singer, composer and songwriter. The greatest guitar player EVER as far as electric guitar – was, without a doubt, Jimi Hendrix. He could even play behind his back or with his tongue. His songs, notwithstanding his licks, made him famous to every college student in the 1960’s and seventies. Hendrix’s music burst forth from those not-so-hallowed halls of academia, where pot and incense mixed together to heighten everybody’s already altered senses. His death was untimely. He was so far ahead of his time that he naturally had to fight the forces of greedy record producers and other jealous guitarists who couldn’t even come close to, stand next to, touch his fire. Shortly after starting his own record company he died of an overdose.

As far as classical guitar playing – the most famous is Andrs Segovia, who achieved worldwide fame in his sixties. His Chaconne by J.S. Bach is incredible. A perfect interpretation of Renaissance music. Segovia’s renditions were technically flawless, smooth, effortless. His music and melodies captured the essential Spain – not the gritty side but the serene beauty, the timeless feel of a sophisticated Iberian sensibility.

At present, the greatest guitar players are mostly found in Spain. Almost no one can play like a Spaniard, unless they have some gypsy in their blood (as Hendrix). Go to a side-street bar late at night in Barcelona or Granada, Spain and hear Flamenco gypsies tear it up. These virtuosos jam on a Tarantas, Pasodobles, Farrucas, Rhumbas. Sometimes a woman Flamenco dancer will dance on a table, while the male guitarists belt-out a wail about a passionate love betrayed or lost -about revenge or racism and poverty. Their language in ancient, a Spanish at times unrecognizable to most people conversant in the language. It is CATALAN, Moorish-gypsy, deeply Catholic. This is terribly exciting music. Flamenco played by Spanish gypsies is so moving, with so much “duende” or feeling. Flamenco artists play it different each time, so it’s always alive, always creative. It’s never boring. Never the same. My absolutely favorite music group is the Gypsy Kings. I’ve seen them perform twice here in Albuquerque and we have their CD’s, DVD’s. Catch them when they come to your town. Although there are not as many musical “stars” in the genre of Flamenco Guitar – those that do exist are as well known as their Rock counterparts. One guitarist in particular is recognized World-wide. Not only for his undeniable artistry, but also for his accomplishments in expanding the frontiers of Flamenco Guitar Music.

Paco De Lucia is undoubtedly “first among equals” in the pantheon of Flamenco Guitar Stars. His concerts have gained him an International reputation. Both with his sextet,and as a solo artist. Although he came from a poor family and received no formal musical education – fortunately, Paco was a child prodigy. That natural talent combined with dedication to years of practice, enabled Paco to begin his career at the tender age of 17. Accompanying the Dance Troupe of Jose Greco. Subsequently,Paco provided the musical background for the legendary Flamenco singer,Carmen De la Istra. A Professional realtionship that lasted 8 years.

Paco continued to elevate both his profile and that of Flamenco Music with the “trio” World tour and CD. The Trio being composed of Paco and fellow guitar superstars John mcLaughlin and Al Di Meola.

Paco’s ability to assimilate,but not imitate other musical styles, while respecting Traditional Flamenco,has naturally influenced the current generation of Flamenco Guitar Superstars.

Ramon Montoya,Sabicas,and Nino Ricardo. The three”wise men” of Flamenco Guitar,were responsible for establishing and popularizing the Flamenco Guitar as a solo instrument. Lifting it from a singer’s amd dancer’s accompanying role in bars and cafes. And it was these Superstars who first introduced authentic Flamenco Music to an International audience.

It was Ramon Montoya, Uncle of the renowned Flamenco guitarist, Carlos Montoya, who first liberated the Flamenco Guitar from it’s role as an accompanying instrument to solo status. The son of a family of Gypsy cattle traders,Ramon Montoya’s persistence and dedication were responsible for opening wider the door to solo Flamenco guitar Music.

Building on Montoya’s accomplishments,and opening that door further was “Sabicas.” After leaving Spain in 1936 at the outbreak of civil war, Sabicas played a prominent role introducing authentic Flamenco Guitar Music to an International audience. Sabicas was renowned for his exceptional technique and unfaltering sense of rhythmn. No doubt a legacy from his early days of accompanying dancers. He was also reputed to have perfect pitch.

Seville’s Nino Ricardo is the 3rd of the “three wise men” of Flamenco Guitar. And the one whose History is the saddest. An accomplished composer with a unique performing style,owing to his upwardly curved fingernails,Nino died of liver failure at the age of 68. Perhaps aggravated by his early years of playing in Seville’s bars and cafes.

Today,a new generation of guitarists are expanding on the legacy of the three Flamenco Guitar Superstars. One of the most innovative is Santiago Cortez. Combining elements of Jazz,Rock,Pop,Classical,Celtic and World Music,while continuing to respect traditional Flamenco forms. Santiago’s impressive sense of melody is always in the foreground. What subjects wouljd be the best?

I would like to become a vet or an animator but i don’t know what subjects to choose.

For a vet – science and DT food. You learn anatomy in PE so that could be helpful but obviously you also do a lot PE in it so I wouldn’t pick it unless you’re interested in that. Vets need good grades though so places might want you to do more academic subjects like history and geography even though these aren’t directly related. Your choices of A-levels need to be relevant but GCSEs choices don’t matter as much.

For an animator – DT graphics, media studies, ICT, art and photography would all be useful. If you can’t decide which career you want to go into before you decide your options then I would suggest doing science and then whatever you think you’ll enjoy most with at least one subject from the ones useful for animation.
