What should I do about my OCD interfering with my studies?

Well, all my life, I’ve had poor comprehension problems. My OCD is making it worse because with the unwanted, intrusive thoughts, I can’t concentrate or focus, & I misread or misunderstand the course material in school. I have a 2.3 GPA with a BA in Spanish. I’m going back to school to try to improve my GPA to try to get into Grad School, but my unwanted thoughts are getting harder & harder to fight. It’s very embarrassing & frustrating. I fight with this daily. People think I’m slow & a dummy, & they think I’m wasting my time, trying to get into Grad School. It’s my OCD & Anxiety that get in the way with my learning, & my depression affects my attendance. I panic when I have to read something or write a paper. My Tourette’s Syndrome gets me in trouble because people think I’m misbehaving, but I can’t help it. I had an anxiety attack & TS outburst & the university wanted to throw me out for DISORDERLY CONDUCT. I can’t control these symptoms, & I take meds & see a psychiatrist.

Well, I too also have OCD and it is such a pain – I understand completely what you are going through. I’ve had so much trouble with school for as far back as I can remeber. The key thing I’ve noticed in what you’ve told us is that your medication does not seem to be working. You need to see your Psychiatrist ASAP. Let them know the medication you are on is not helping. They may either need to raise your dosage or change your medication all together. Also, if they just put you on a new medication or changed your dosage, it may take some time before you see the effects of it. If, however, your Psychiatrist does not think your medication needs to be changed, it may be time to find another Psychiatrist. They really need to understand that this is ruining your life and you want to get better. In the mean time, you may want to find a tutor or a friend to help you study. Also try talking with your Professors when classes start, so they can have a better understanding of the difficulty you are having. Some (but not all) may understand where you are coming from and offer some help. Having this disorder means you will have to work twice as hard, but you can do it!!! Good Luck. My thoughts are with you.

Classroom Rugs – Children’s Inspiration to Learning

Children today are easily distracted when it comes to learning and teaching children is tough. Teachers and childcare providers need all the help they can get when it comes to educating children. A classroom rug is a teaching aid that is invaluable in the classroom. These bright and fun classroom carpets come in many shapes, sizes, and themes. All geared to help the classroom teacher or daycare provider educate and inspire children.

Who uses Classroom Rugs?

Many classroom rugs on the market today have been designed with the preschool or elementary school teacher in mind. Also, faith based rugs have made a big impact in private schools and churches. Educators that teach preschool to elementary age children use alphabet rugs and number rugs to teach the early learning basics. Plus, there are childrens rugs available to teach color and shape recognition. Librarians use library rugs at circle time to organize children for maximum quietness and order. There are even map rugs, Spanish rugs, and music rugs to teach kids social studies, foreign languages, and music. Finally, we know kids are energetic and need play time to be healthy and develop social skills and to meet this need there are many play rugs available.

Classroom Carpets that Teach and Organize

Above we discussed who uses classroom rugs and briefly touched on how they are used, but let’s take a closer look. Below is list of some of the common themes of classroom rugs currently available.

Alphabet Rugs – Available with uppercase, lowercase, combination, and with images and letters. An alphabet rug will aid in letter recognition and phonics. Children’s rugs with letters and images aid in letter association with a word — for example, the letter “D” and a picture of a dinosaur. Teachers can use an alphabet carpet to teach preschool and elementary school students the alphabet and spelling. Learning this way is fun, exciting, & interactive!

Number Rugs – With a number rug children will learn to recognize numbers and learn to count. Some children’s rugs come with both the alphabet and numbers.

Seating Rugs – Seating classroom carpets usually come with colored squares or circles arranged in a grid or pattern and are designed to seat a certain number of children. Depending classroom size you can seat up to 20 to 30 kids on one classroom carpet. The larger the carpet the more children you can seat. Seating rugs are great for sharing at circle time or reading at story time. A seating rug organizes children which translates into a calmer and more peaceful classroom. Teachers and librarians will love seating rugs!

Shape and Color Rugs – Teach geometric shapes and color recognition. Elements of this theme of rugs is often found in some of the other classroom carpet themes, but if you need to teach color and what a square, circle, triangle, oval, etc. look like then pick one of these kids rugs.

Faith Based Rugs – A faith based rug usually includes elements of the above carpets, but also includes a religious teaching. If you teach in a Catholic school, Christian school, Jewish school, or church you will find a large selection of religious rugs to choose.

Bilingual Rugs – Today teaching another language is critical as different cultures come together. A bilingual rug in Spanish-English or French-English are available to teach either ESL kids English or English speaking children Spanish or French. Look for bilingual rugs that teach numbers, letters, colors, shapes, and word association. Some bilingual rugs teach several of these on the same carpet. What a fun way to learn another language & teach cultural diversity!

Map Rugs – A great teacher’s aid for teaching geography or social studies. Look for carpets that include all 50 U.S. States or a world map rug that includes all the continents and their names. With a map rug children will learn U.S and world geography in a snap!

Play Rugs – When kids need to be inside look to a play rug as a fun alternative to board games. Hopscotch rugs are a fun activity that most kids will love. Road rugs that have city streets can be used for playing with toy cars, etc. These carpets help kids learn fine motor skills, coordination, and balance.

As teachers look for new, exciting, and fun ways to grab the attention of children and inspire them to learn, one alternative is to include classroom rugs as a teaching aide. There are many shapes, sizes, colors, and themes available today that preschool and elementary teachers, daycare centers, and churches can find that will fit their needs. Adding one of these children’s rugs will also brightened up a dull classroom!

Learn Spanish Free Online

The number of English speakers who want To Learn Spanish is growing. For many Americans, it is because they find that Spanish is rapidly becoming accepted as the second language all over the country. The’ Latin invasion’ is no more confined to areas around Miami and LA. For this reason, interest in Learning Spanish is growing in the United States especially for children, as most adults feel that they have passed the age where they can acquire a new language. For most of us, cost or time is the issue. This shouldn’t be the case. Begin any attempt to learn a new language with the idea that it is going to take time (probably years). You are not going to be Speaking Spanish fluently in a month or two (although some language learning programs make that claim). It is better to spend just half an hour a day than spending 3 hours a day for a few days and then taking few days off. Not only will you get burned out very quickly but it is also not the most efficient way of going about it.

Today, just about anything you want to learn is available somewhere on the internet for little or no money. Although most sites are trying to sell you a product, many offer some basic Spanish Lessons for free to get you interested with the hope that you will check out their product. It’s important to read reviews of any Spanish Language Learning software or Book/CD packages a company is selling. The site itself will always claim that they have the perfect product for you and that they can get you speaking Spanish in no time. It is always better to check reviews on sites like Amazon.com to see what people who have bought the product think of it.

The best way is to begin with sources that don’t cost a lot of money. Check out a few books (try to get something with CDs or tapes) from your local library, just to get a feel for what to expect. You may get lucky and find a couple of really good language learning packs there. After you have a good feel for what exactly you would like to learn, go online and do a search on language courses. You will literally get thousands of results (if not hundreds of thousands). Most adults want a learning methodology that is more practical, i.e. they want to learn practical spoken Spanish. So rather than just searching for keywords like ‘spanish’, ‘online’, ‘free lessons’, you should use keywords like ‘practical Spanish’ or ‘learn practical Spanish Online‘ in order to avoid sites that just focus on grammar or the technical parts of the language. Some sites like the grammar section at Wikipedia, give you a good technical explanation of grammar but not a lot of examples on practical usage. You want to find sites that will acquaint you with the way the language is actually spoken, not just the grammar rules.

To get started, try About.com for some free Spanish lessons. They have plenty of material for beginners as well as some great articles about how to get started. Plenty of Spanish books are available to be downloaded for free from sites like Ebookee.com. There are some restrictions but you could get quite a few good books along with the audio portion for free. Sites like http://learnpracticalspanishonline.com/ offer a full course for beginners and plenty of intermediate material for free. The site doesn’t have a lot of graphics and animation but the content is geared more toward a practical approach that will help you with Conversational Spanish.

After all, you are picking a name that’s going to be with the baby for a long time. Brainstorming the perfect unique Baby Names, http://www.cards-411.com/baby-names won’t be an easy job. You might want to check out the names meanings or the name origin before making a selection. You might prefer to choose a name from lists or you might want to avoid these names altogether. So let the expert on baby stationery and all things related to welcoming new babies into the home, help give you some great tips.

Getting Inspiration

You can look at web sites and in books full of babies names but you may never find one that really grabs you. Instead, don’t force the name selection process. Just be open to inspiration. One of the staff members remembers choosing the name of her daughter after watching a Disney movie. She just loved the name and said to herself, “When I have a little girl, that’s the name she’s going to get.” Two years later, her daughter was born and she named her Ariel after the Little Mermaid.

Sometime inspiration comes at the last minute. Another one of our staff members remembered the story of how she got her Unusual Baby Names, http://www.express-invitations.com/baby-shower-invitations/ Even though her parents had decided on a completely different name for her long before she was born, her father took one look at the baby and suggested naming her after one of the relatives. And in that flash of a second their decision had been completely reversed.

Other Avenues

While inspiration works some of the time, you might not want to make snap decisions on names for your children without looking into those baby name meanings. If you want something with international flair, cute Boy Baby Names, http://www.birth-cards.com/Baby_Names might include Bonita which is Spanish for beautiful or Rahima which is Arabic for compassionate. When you’re looking at boy names, you might want to avoid a name like Hayden which comes from German and means heathen. The good news is that some has partnered with a number of web sites that provide easy-to-navigate lists of Boy Baby Names that you can use to narrow your searches and to find the perfect choice for your little one.

Popularity Contest

While looking at lists of meanings names might be somewhat helpful, other parents want to choose unique baby names for their new baby. As a result, they want to find those lists of baby names ranked by popularity. Some can hook you up with those lists, too. And that way you can decide whether they want an Emily or a Jacob, the two most popular names for babies born in 2007 or a Trystan or Zaniya which were ranked 1,000 on the same list for 2007.

If you have Leopard (OS X 10.5), you can install Windows on a separate partition on your hard drive using Boot Camp, or you can buy an emulator like Parallels or VMWare Fusion.

Spanish Berths as an Alternative Investment

Since the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, and the start of tourism and package holidays, Spain has been transformed into one of the leading European economies, with a diversified market covering both the manufacturing and service sectors. Between 1961 and 1973, the so called years of development, the Spanish economy grew at 7% a year with a per capita income of $500 per year. After joining the EU in 1986, Spain once again had one of the world’s fastest growing economies, with annual growth averaging 4.1% in the period between 1986 and 1991, compared with an EU average of 3%. Likewise, foreign trade grew from $23.8 billon in 1975, to $52.5 billion by 1980, and to $143 billion by 1990.

Today, the economy of Spain is the fifth largest in Europe, accounting for around 9% of EU output. Income, at 78% of the EU average, is among the lowest in the EU, although it is well ahead of Ireland, Portugal and Greece. Spain’s main trading partners are France, Germany and Italy for exports, and Germany, France and Italy for imports. Spain’s most important industries include tourism, chemicals and petrochemicals, heavy industry, and food and beverages. Spain is also Europe’s fourth largest manufacturing country after Germany France and Italy. The principle growth areas include tourism, insurance, property development, electronics and financial services. Tourism is one of Spain’s most important industries, especially in Andalucia, earning approx. 4% of GDP and employing some 10% of the workforce, both directly and indirectly. With over 5,000 kms of coastline, and a unique blend of almost perfect year round weather and Mediterranean lifestyle, Spain has become a Mecca for holidaymakers and boating enthusiasts alike.

With the advent of the low cost airlines, a weekend trip to Spain has now become the norm for many European travellers, and the huge Eastern coast, all 750 miles of it, is still home to more British boats than anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Whilst the booming economy and influx of foreign visitors in the seventies and eighties certainly caused it own unique problems, the development of smart marina complexes such as Sotogrande, and the hosting of the 2007 Americas Cup in Valencia, are undoubtedly attracting the boating enthusiasts back in huge numbers. Increasingly, many of these enthusiasts are also buying second homes, either as a holiday home to enjoy their boat on trips to Spain, or indeed to retire.

In terms of demographics, the generation of buyers termed the ‘baby boomers’ (currently 42 – 58 years old), is now due to retire within the next 10 years. With considerable wealth, which has been built on property, business interests and inheritance, they have little desire to see these assets taxed on death. This trend is now being seen throughout Europe, and in a cultural change, this age group is retiring earlier, spending more of its wealth, and in general enjoying life to the full. In the UK, this exodus which was once a small trickle has now become a torrent. Increasingly wealthy, and healthy, individuals are moving abroad, encouraged by the media and low cost travel, in order to enjoy a more relaxed and enjoyable life in the sun. With global demand for recreational boats estimated to reach $24 billion by 2006, projected growth of annual sales worldwide of 7%, and with Europe experiencing the highest growth in the last five years, there seems little to stop the European market growing and expanding further in the next few years.

Owning and maintaining a boat in Spain is becoming easier, cheaper, and considerably more enjoyable than the UK. With the advent of cheap flights, more scheduled services, and new infrastructure, it is easier and quicker to reach the Spanish coast and be on the water, than it is for an owner in the Midlands to reach his boat in Southampton. The Spanish coastline is divided into six Costas – the Costa del Sol is the most southerly, followed by the Costa Calida, Costa Blanca, Costa del Azahar, Costa Dorada and the most northerly, the Costa Brava. The atmosphere on Spain’s coastline varies enormously from Costa to Costa and from marina to marina. From the small and beautiful Cabopino to the glitzy Puerto Banus, where yachts are squeezed in purely to be admired by the less well off passers by! Major cities such as Valencia, Almeria, Malaga and Barcelona offer marina facilities right at their centre, an option that is becoming more popular as many cities are being turned into world class destinations. Valencia in particular is beginning to rival Barcelona, as the impending America’s cup has drawn billions of euros of investment into the area. Marinas and boating facilities on both sides of Valencia such as Denia, and areas to the south of the city, are feeling the benefits.

The islands of the Balearics cover a tiny fraction of the Mediterranean, yet are perhaps one of its most popular cruising areas, and as such are the most densely populated with boats. In recent years Mallorca has shed its night club image, and a huge marketing campaign has pushed the relatively unknown and more beautiful aspects of the island. A recent article in the Majorca Daily Bulletin outlined the amount of money being invested in property and yachts on the island by UK city traders. With bonuses in excess of 1m euros, these buyers not only want a house, but a yacht to match. This, like elsewhere, has led to unprecedented demand for mooring space. Whether boat owners want a quiet laid back marina, or one with a busy night life, the one thing they all have in common is a lack of adequate berths, both in size and availability.

The shortage of berths in the Mediterranean is getting worse. There are currently an estimated 160,000 boats waiting for a long term space and skippers lucky enough to have one are sitting tight. Only recently, a report commissioned by the Spanish Government concluded that in 2005, a total of 2,300 yachts will be looking for berths in Andalucia alone, and by the year 2020 that this figure would leap to over 5,000 yachts in just this one area. The report concludes: The demand from the nautical sector of the tourism market, on the Costa del Sol alone, is reaching unprecedented figures, which can only be remedied by a dramatic upgrading of facilities. Indeed the 11 ports on the coast, which cater for yachts, only have 4,200 mooring points between them. Figures issued by the Costa del Sol Tourist Authority suggest the Costa’s ports would need to increase by 300% the number of available mooring spaces just to satisfy current requirements.

The Director-General of the Costa del Sol Tourism, Ana Gomez said “We are lacking many mooring points and because of this waiting lists are tremendous”. She went on to explain that due to the marinas being at saturation there was little benefit to be had from marketing and promotion. Nearly 60% of owners were tourists predominantly from Germany, France and the UK. With the lack of availability, prices of berths have risen dramatically, along with the annual rentals demanded by owners. This has compounded the problem, as investors are now moving into the market with the prospect of long term capital growth, coupled with excellent rental returns of between 8% and 15%. Berth prices vary enormously and depend on several factors, including the size (length and width), location (both of the marina, and position within the marina itself), and the length of lease remaining. In general they start at 50,000 euros approx. and go to several million for the very biggest. As an example there is currently a 20m berth in Sotogrande for sale at 600,000 euros – a similar size berth in Puerto Banus would sell for well over a million (if one were available!)

When a new marina is established, it is leased to the port operator by the Government for a fixed period. These periods are normally between 30 and 50 years. The berths are then bought and sold on a leasehold basis only. Gradually over time, the length of the lease left on a berth becomes shorter depending on the date the original lease was granted to the port operator. Typically berths will have leases remaining of between 15 and 25 years. Naturally in a brand new marina, the berth would have a full term lease. Each berth will have its own escritura, essentially a land title document, which is signed and witnessed by a notary in any sale or purchase. Each berth is defined by its size and a reference number on the port authority plan. Berths are always quoted in length and width ie. (8m x 3m).The bigger the boat, the wider the berth has to be! Berths are bought and sold by brokers. The largest of these is Genus Marine Leisure, who has been working in Spain for nearly 20 years. The prices for any particular berth are dictated by supply and demand, and with so much experience, Genus know all the marinas intimately and can therefore price their berths to sell at sensible market prices. If it is considered that the owner is asking too much, the berth sale is refused. In some marinas it is only possible to buy the berth, but not to rent it out to someone else (this was a condition of the original lease to the port authority). We can supply a list of these (if required). In these marinas boat owners can only use the berth themselves. Sailing conditions in the Mediterranean are virtually perfect, as there are no tides to cause problems either in sailing conditions or in entry or exit to marinas. In the UK (as elsewhere) trips have to be planned extremely carefully to ensure that the boat can both leave and enter the port with the tide. This can mean waiting for hours for the correct conditions – something that never happens in the Med! In the UK, boating is restricted to the summer months (3 at best) – more and more owners are now moving abroad to have access to 12 months of sailing in warm and calm water.

Motor boat enthusiasts tend to berth around the Costa del Sol marinas for two reasons. Firstly the diesel in Gibraltar is substantially cheaper than in Spain. Secondly the weather conditions are smoother and calmer. (The Costa de La Luz facing the Atlantic is noted for its windy conditions and attracts the windsurfers) Sailing enthusiasts tend to berth further North, towards the Balearics, as there is generally more wind, and therefore better sailing conditions. In Spain, as elsewhere throughout Europe, there is an extremely strong environmental lobby which has grown in strength in the last decade, particularly with the election of Green MEP’s to Brussels. Throughout the world, environmentally sensitive areas are being protected and designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty or as nature reserves. The argument for building more berths has never been stronger, but neither have the environmental pressures on an already developed coastline.

The Spanish Costas, and particularly the Coast del Sol, have been warned of impending environmental catastrophe if development is not brought under control. The Government is an extremely awkward position, since eco tourism is destined to be a major growth market in the next decade. However it is also acutely aware of the lack of facilities and berths for boat owners and operators. Plans for new marinas are constantly proposed, but generally drag on for many years through lengthy planning and lobbying meetings. Motor boats in particular are not considered to be environmentally friendly. Accidental fuel discharge and emptying of tanks in port (accidental or otherwise) do not help. Whilst the Green lobby is fighting to prevent further marina development, the availability of berths becomes more acute. In Italy recently, a new law has been introduced banning motor boats from coming within 200m of the coastline, making it illegal to anchor in rocky inlets and coves.

All of this helps to push prices of berths even higher. Berths that were selling for 10,000 to 20,000 euros a few years ago, are now changing hands for 80,000 to 100,000 euros. This trend can only continue with the lack of new marinas being built. As a specialist marine financial services company Marinablu offers a unique facility with our Spanish banking partners to provide berth finance, tied directly to the berth itself. This facility is only available via ourselves. This allows our clients ( whether boat owners or investors ) to raise capital against the berth itself. Existing owners are also able to release equity from their berths to buy a bigger boat or simply to re-invest in another berth.

PS-We are currently selling one of our berths in Estapona – a 25m berth – please email for more details.

Rocket Spanish Torrent

I’m very glad I can share my experiences of Learning Spanish with you, hoping you will find it useful.

The first thought of learning Spanish came to me about 1 year ago when I was travelling in Spain and I noticed rhyming beauty in the pronunciation of this language, what attracted me most. So several months ago I decided to take actions on it. There’re two options mainly: Going to a classroom course or choose an online course. Because of the time limitation and not bothering with all the hassle of wasting time on the way, I decided to give online course a go.

After a lot of research and comparing Online Spanish courses, two names popped out: Rocket Spanish and Rosseta Stone. Both are highly appraised for their interactive software programs. But I finally went to Rocket Spanish for 3 reasons: According to some reviews, beginners find it extremely easy to fit into Rocket Spanish environment without the normal frustration and difficulty; the competitive price Rocket offers:100 dollars while Rosseta Stone is as 3 times expensive; Rocket Spanish’s fully refunding policy which guarantee to give back all your money if you’re unsatisfied after 60 days trial.

So after I’ve been working with Rocket Spanish for several months I want o say, just to put it simple, that Rocket really rocks! I now can converse with Hispanics fluently and confidently. I always receive appraise for my accurate pronunciation!

The main frame of Rocket Spanish is consisting of 31 audio courses. I’ve been immersing myself in these delicately-designed Spanish courses, when I’m driving, eating, waiting and even dozing off! And of course, if you’re more an old school, these 31 courses can also be provided in a format of 500 pages hardcopy for you to read anywhere. I as well find the forum support function very helpful especially when I was just beginning.

Yet the fun part is sill coming! I especially love these 2 exclusive games: MegaVocab and MegaAudio. Thanks to them I never felt bored or stressed in learning a brand new language. MegaVocab is designed to enhance your Spanish Vocabulary: you need to choose one Spanish word from 4 options to match with a vivid image. MegaAudio is to show you 6 pictures, speak the Spanish Pronunciation, than you got to match it withone of the 6. Look familiar? Actually, this is exactly the way we pick up our mother tongue! Both games are interactive and so much fun to play with. The scoring system can allow you to keep a close eye on how you progress.

So if you want to pursue a friendly, relaxing, fun-being, Spanish Learning online course, I highly recommend you Rocket Spanish from my personal learning experience.

Music in our Classrooms Help Children Learn

I remember the listening center I set up in my elementary school classroom as if it was yesterday. It was my first year of teaching, and I was so proud of that blue denim beanbag chair and cassette tape listening station that I had put together to introduce Spanish to my second graders. I had decided not to subject the little seven year olds to me singing acappella on the tapes I made at home, but I did incorporate some rhythmic beat to make the learning easier. I chanted the vocabulary word in English first then in Spanish and repeated the pair again, leaving time for the student to repeat the words out loud.

It worked! The little darlings were begging me to make more and more tapes each weekend, thinking I had no other life outside of being their teacher. (For those of you who are teachers you can so relate to that feeling!) And so it was, way back in the early 1980s, I was carrying on the tradition of what generations of parents and teachers had been doing which was to introduce new concepts to kids with rhythm and song.

Why does this technique work so well that even as adults we recall a cute little tune our French teacher taught us to learn the colors in French or that silly little chant our Science teacher rapped off to us about the Solar System so that we never forgot the order of the planets as long as we could recite our little rap out loud? There are many studies, some recent and some from years back, that explain to us how music works so well in the learning process.

As adults, we intuitively realize that students who have had the opportunity to study music tend to do better in school and in life, and over the years there has been quite a lot of research to support those feelings. It has been proven that children who study music perform better on tests. There have been many studies conducted where the conclusions point to kids participating in music programs show enhanced academic performance and better social skills.

It is even more astounding to note that a study conducted by the College Entrance Examination Board reports students with experience in music performance or courses that involved music scored more than fifty points higher on the verbal section of the SAT and more than forty points higher on the math section. As a parent and teacher that means a lot to me and my take on the arts in the education of my children.

Music engages children and allows them to learn concepts that sometimes are difficult without the beat or without the rhythm of a song. It allows children to remember important facts, whether they are in history, science, math or language arts. Imagine the feeling of success a child experiences once he has mastered his ABCs thanks to that little song placed to the melody of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. You have seen the delight on many faces of toddlers and preschoolers who master that twenty-six letter song!

Music helps many children build a level of confidence they might never have experienced had it not been for music. Children gain nourishment from music in their classrooms, in their homes, in their daily routines. Sometimes that child who feels no success in the academic side of school finally is introduced to music with that one special teacher and the rest is history (no pun intended!). Drop outs may become drop ins thanks to a little rap, a simple play of jazz or a classic tune played during art class for inspiration.

Exposing children to other cultures, other people, and other lands far from theirs come many times through music. What a lovely way to hear what the new student in school used to listen to daily by appreciating and playing the music from his country during his first week in class. Imagine the impact that teacher makes on the success of this new student by embracing the culture of this new student, inviting her to bring in a CD from home or a song book from her childhood. The encouragement it provides her as a new member of this society along with the world experience it allows all of the members of the class to have are things no text book could ever provide with such feeling, such emotion.

Music is the universal language of our world. Whether you speak English, Spanish, French, Hindu, Mandarin, Farsi, or any of the other thousands of languages in our world, you will always be connected to your neighbor, your co-worker, your new friend by music. And it is that music that should continue to be a large part of the learning you expose your child to and insist that his school continue to incorporate in order to bring the learning to life and make the learning fun.

Lately, the group They Might Be Giants has put out kids music, most notably used on Playhouse Disney as filler between shows. They have released some kid-friendly albums (Here Come the ABC’s, No! and Bed Bed Bed). I’ve liked their quirky albums since they first started out as an alternative group, and their children’s albums are wonderful.

Frigiliana – Mountainous Spanish Village of Sugar Canes

The small village of Frigiliana located to the east of the Malaga region in Axaquia has a population of around 2,690 people and sits 435m above sea level in the area between the Montes de Malaga and the Mediterranean Sea. It is just a short, 56km drive from the main airport of the region in Malaga and can be found on the southern side of the Alimjara Mountain. The proximity to the mountain and the water which flows from it, such as the river Chillar that passes through the village, make the lands around this region very fertile.

Megalithic monuments and the remains of a necropolis have been discovered in the village, which serve as evidence that the area was occupied as far back in history as the prehistoric period. The name of the village is thought to have originated from the Latin Frexinius, as the Romans and Arabs were one-time occupiers of the area as can be seen by the Moorish fortress dating from the 11th century but now laying in ruins, which once safeguarded the security of the inhabitants.

History books describe Frigiliana as a rocky and mountainous place that could be defended from an entire army of invaders by a relatively small number of well armed people, due mainly to the difficulty they would have in gaining access. One such historical story goes that when the village was surrounded by the Catholic troops of Arevalo de Suazo and a further twelve infantry units returning from battles in Italy, over two thousand of the four thousand Moriscos living in the village died during their attempts to protect it.

During the battle many of the village’s women, who had fought bravely beside the men, chose to jump from the cliffs with their children in preference to becoming captured by the Catholic troops. Some of them did manage to escape into the Alpujarras Mountains, but as many of them had been badly injured during battle, they died before reaching safety. The Catholics eventually drove out the Moriscos in 1609 and subsequently divided up their possessions between them.

The fertile lands surrounding the village make this an ideal place to cultivate crops and this makes agriculture the main source of income for the village particularly vines and olive trees and in more recent times subtropical fruits too.

The streets of Frigiliana run parallel and perpendicular to the central square and the village is regarded as having the finest Arab constructions in the province with Moorish architecture in the form of passageways, steps and gates in evidence.

The sugar cane factory, which was the palace of the Count of Frigiliana during the sixteenth century, and the remains of a silo dating from 1767 are preserved for modern day visitors. Ceramic panels by Amparo Ruiz de Luna describing the battle of Frigiliana are one of the more famed monuments in the village. Blankets, carpets and all other sorts of loom work are also industries that make the village famous.

As is the norm with many Spanish villages, fiestas are part of the way of life and Frigiliana is no different, enjoying the festival honouring San Sebastian and the San Antonio pilgrimage occurring on June 13th each year with the May and Easter processions also being noteworthy events.

Cuisine of the village has many traditional recipes, which include baby goat in either almond or garlic sauce, fennel, cabbage and the famous Easter stew (made with cod, egg and flour all soaked in sugar cane honey). Black pudding and chorizo are some other popular dishes of the village and honey made from sugar cane is used in a wide variety of sweets including arropia and marcocha in which the honey is left to solidify and in other products such as flans, yoghurts, etc. The local wine is also well known and much esteemed.
