The Development Of –Isms In Design

Some years ago, minimalism was the hottest trend in interior design, however, that name ceased to constantly ring in everybody’s years. This never meant that Minimalism, as a trend, is over, but that as a trend, it came and went; therefore talking of minimalism in design is not that “hot” any more. Nevertheless, Minimalism is still with us. Maybe we don’t hear of it that much because time goes by and the need to create more and new isms is imperative, but what Minimalism stands for is still more than contemporary, is current. These are some of the characteristic of this ism: • Abstraction.

• Economy in language and means.

• Industrial production and standardization.

• Literal use of materials.

• Austerity with lack of ornaments.

• Structural and functional purism.

• Order.

• Elemental rectilinear Geometry.

• Precision in finishings.

• Reduction and Synthesis.

• Simpleness.

• Concentration.

• Façade prominence.

• Dematerialization.

Probably, the main reason for attenuating Minimalism was that it was considered rather cold, and if this had occurred it is mainly because this ism seems to be the exact opposite to baroque art, both of them, are extremes. The emergence of this trend in interior design can have, at least, one very simple explanation: contrast with the outside word. The first things you see when you step out of your city house are: buildings, cars, advertisements, and thousands of people, all of the previous with different colors, shapes, sizes, etc. The answer to this chaos is Minimalism: order, simpleness, austerity and purism. Yet, many prefer to come back to a cozy and warm place, and that is also perfectly logical. Clear glass furniture might be the best ally when trying to achieve a Minimalist style –as well as when having room space issues-, its simple, transparent, flat and slim. A clear glass table is not menacing at all, but on the contrary is subtle and suggestive: On the same page, colored glass is still very useful for an extra effect: reflection, especially in red and black glass tables. Could we conceive then a piece of furniture where design opposites (Minimalism and Baroque) touch? If the answer to this question is yes then a combination of materials is necessary. In this case, I am going to suggest glass (modern) and wood (classic and basic) coffee table : the Dragons Nutmeg from FurnitureULike.co.uk. Of course, in the end, this cannot be described as a minimalist –not at all!- piece of furniture nor as a baroque one and neither as a 100% oriental piece. The only category that I can find to describe this item is “hybrid”. Many may immediately associate this word with biology or biogenetic, etc, whoever, we can find the use of this word in arts as well as literature: Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca’s (Jerez de la Frontera, 1507 – Sevilla, 1559) text Naufragios (the names have been many, even when he was alive) is now studied as literature and considered a hybrid (when in fact the reasons for writing this “relación” was to present it on the Spanish courts as an explanation of why the expedition to America was an absolute failure, therefore its main purpose was to be convincing, rhetoric). The challenge of this type of texts, now classed as “Crónicas de Indias” was to find a way to describe something absolutely new, things that have never been seen nor described with the absolute lack of any precedents. The creation of hybrids is the result, mixing genres, registers, codes, and using, as Christopher Columbus did in his diaries with mythology, allusions to known literature models. The value of hybrids is immense, and they indeed of utter interest because it represents a challenge for the ones that want to study where the base components and the new effect that their mixing produces. We may then take the liberty of denominate this unique coffee table of hybrid. And for the ones looking for new isms we are also going to dare to classify this style as hybridism. It is definitely a coffee table to take to consideration for the rare item seekers.

The Dysfunctional Parent of the Dysfunctional Child

Being a parent is undoubtedly the most challenging role that anyone could ever embark upon in life. One of the most disturbing paradoxes in life is that children are usually raised by people who themselves carried a variety of consternations into adulthood. It is a compelling argument that there is no such a thing as a ¨normal¨ person who is free of dysfunctional behavior. If that is the case, is there help available for anyone in this life? Perhaps there isn´t one solution and it is more likely that the ones who get through life best are the ones who can accept their shortcomings and avidly take measures to counter their inherent dysfunctional behavior.

At this point, it might be helpful if a definition of ¨dysfunctional behavior¨ is established. There are so many scientific definitions but it seems to me that dysfunctional simply means that you haven´t yet found your niche in life and stabilized yourself and your situation enough to be successful in your social, academic or professional endeavors. It is frightening to discover, though, that this describe most of us!

From single parent to twice-married wife and mom, I still haven´t figured out all the rights and wrongs in this parenting job. I have had some of the worst experiences and the best experiences with my son. He is both a problem and the solution to so many things in my life. I am glad when I get a respite and he isn´t in the house but I also miss him when he is gone. I gave birth to the brightest young man who also happens to have been the poster-child for problem kids. Why is my son the embodiment of so many contradictions? Perhaps it is a combination of factors that range from being raised fatherless, living in too many places at too many different times and having a mother who spent most of his life trying to make it all up to him by overindulging him at every opportunity.

Our experiences as children absolutely affect the type of parents that we become. My parents have each married and divorced several times and they never really spoke with us children about their problems. But like many other children, we already knew what most of the problems were from witnessing or just overhearing arguments between our parents. I thought frequent arguments that resulted in separations and silent treatments were normal in families and I brought that thinking into my adulthood. I had frequently argued with my female friends, former boyfriends or husband in front of my son. I never knew the kind of distress this caused in my son. He said he felt helpless and confused and alone many times when this happened. He was always very protective of me and felt the need to take my side in any argument even if I was wrong. I guess I just assumed that my son knew the arguments weren´t directly about him, so I never bothered to explain things, apologize or attempt not to argue in front of him. I never knew that he thought he was the problem most of the time.

I became pregnant at twenty-one years of age and the father of my son abandoned me very early on in the pregnancy. I contemplated abortions many times because I was afraid of raising a child alone, but I made the decision to have my son anyway and face whatever life brought. I didn´t know there would be so many sleepless nights and that I would have a problem child who would get thrown out of schools several times. But he also completely changed the path of my life in a positive and profound way by forcing me to face reality rather than run from it. I had to face responsibility in a very abrupt way the day I gave birth to my son. I realized I had a real person´s life in my hands and that I had to provide him with a place to live, feed him, clothe him, bathe him and teach him right from wrong. Of course you think about these things when you´re pregnant but it didn´t really sink in until I held in my hands this seven-pound four-ounce baby who had just emerged from my body. I struggled to balance the responsibilities of motherhood and single-parenting with work and trying to have friends and boyfriends. Everything I did, literally everything I did, affected my son- from talking on the phone to friends, leaving my baby at a sitter´s to go to work and finding time to take my son to the park to play.

I did the best I could, but that didn´t always mean I did the right thing. I found sitters that I could afford and that sometimes meant my son spent the day in less than hospitable places. I bought cheap clothes from second-hand thrift stores because I had very little money to spend on clothes and I could have done better with keeping those clothes cleaner. My son and I slept several times for several months on the couches of friends when we didn´t have a place to stay. But I was a fool. I could have relied on my family more and swallowed my pride that dictated that I should do this by myself because I had this child by myself. I´m so angry at my irresponsibility with life in general and I know that it has seeped into my son´s thinking too. He didn´t follow through on many of his tasks at home or school because he wasn´t willing to make the necessary sacrifices and I never enforced responsibility properly. I didn’t learn until much later in my son´s life that there was no room for pride where necessities were concerned.

Throughout his life my son has been a continual problem at schools- both public and private when I could eventually afford to send him to one. He couldn´t get along with his peers and he began to constantly lie about school and his responsibilities to avoid doing them. I did the only thing I knew to do in these situations- I spanked him. In fact I spanked him so much and so hard sometimes that many people thought I was being abusive. I didn´t want to hurt my child as much as I wanted him to start behaving and listening. But I knew I had to find another way to reach my son.

One day after work and after a long day of researching options like mentors and psychological help and medication for problem children, I decided to try something that my parents never did with me when I was young- I tried talking to my son. I took the advice of an older, experienced single mother that I met online (yes, online) and I decided to sit down and talk to my son in his room just before bed. I presented him with some of his toy figures and asked him to show me how life was for him every day at home, with friends and at school. He started with school and demonstrated that he knew he wasn´t doing his work and that he got in trouble for not obeying the teacher about talking and staying in his seat. He was extremely hyperactive and difficult to control at school and sometimes at home. He also demonstrated how he was teased so much by other children and how they would take things from him and attack him. I always taught him not to fight and I felt so guilty while I listened to his stories of other kids picking on him so much. Then, he described his relationship with me and showed how he got spanked so much and how I never listened to him and how I didn´t do many fun things with him. He told me once that the most fun he had with me was when we took a bus ride from the East Coast to the West Coast for three days. He said we talked, we laughed and we didn´t fight about school or his behavior. We just had a good time. I wanted so badly for that to happen more often but I didn´t know what to do to make it all right. But I knew the change in my son could only start with a change in me.

I had tough decisions to make and that meant (1) eliminating distractions while I worked on my relationship with my son, (2) finding out why he was having trouble socially and academically, and (3) providing more stability and family involvement in his life. It took years for me to successfully implement these things and I cried and suffered insomnia so much but I was willing to own the responsibility for taking part in having a problem child. My son started seeing counselors and psychologists with me and he started taking medication that sometimes helped him to control himself. Once I began implementing those changes in our life, I began to see small changes in my son- and in myself. We became more stable financially and emotionally. We spent more time with my family. And we never had to sleep on anyone´s couch again.

My son is now fifteen. I am married and living in Spain. My son is now taller than me and I am certain he is smarter than me too. He is fully bilingual and speaks English and Spanish fluently. His Spanish was self-taught and he is even helping me to learn better Spanish. He attends a Spanish Catholic boarding school and had a very difficult first year there. He had to fight his old nemeses of hyperactivity and disobedience. With my husband´s help, I had to become more consistent with disciplining my son and enforcing repercussions for disobedience and not following instructions at home first before my son really began to respond to the more structured and strict atmosphere of the boarding school. Letting him go away to school was one of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make in my life. I wanted him near me for company, but I also knew that he had to become more independent and learn to make better decisions in his life. He had to learn to teach himself apart from me because I was part of the reason he had so many problems anyway. He still makes bad decisions but the change is that he is able to face them and make better ones the next time a similar situation presents itself. By letting him go away from me, he has taught himself and me more about responsibility than I could ever have done at home with him. I see my son on the weekends every two weeks and all summer long during summer vacation and he has really grown into a more responsible young man. He is more clean-cut, more organized, more scholarly, but also more aggressive towards me and my husband. I am working on his aggressive manner towards me and his step-father but I believe that the aggressiveness is a result of newly-found freedom and independence. My task now is to help him balance that independence with the social responsibilities of respecting his parents and others and their opinions. I am certain that this can only be possible with patience and keeping the lines of communication open between him and me. I have not been a perfect mother and I never will be, but neither have I ever regretted giving birth to my problem child. By examining his problems and challenges, I was able to gain a better understanding of my own problems and challenges too. Together, we are learning about overcoming dysfunctional hindrances and making something of ourselves in spite of the challenges that life dealt us.

i’m looking for some good spanish books for my grandma?

such as classics, or even modern novels. I’ve bought her Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer because I know she wanted them. ANy good novels you could recommend in spanish editions?

Someone recently recommended “Camino del Altar” by Jeanne Allen for me when I was looking for Spanish books to use to try to translate to English (I’m trying to Learn Spanish). It’s a romance novel, which I’m not really into, but it’s published by Harlequin, and they are pretty much the “industry leaders” in romance. So, I’m assuming it’s probably a decent book.

I wouldn’t have mentioned it since I haven’t read it yet, but I thought you might want to check into it if she likes romance novels.

If it doesn’t need to be entirely in Spanish, “Mangos, Bananas, and Coconuts: A Cuban Love Story” or “Papaya Princess”, both by Himilce Novas are really good. I read the English versions, but have heard they have both been translated to Spanish, so maybe with a little research, you could find them if you are interested.

It is a wonderful city with highly fascinating people. The paradox with Madrid is that quite often it is viewed as being second to Barcelona in terms of appeal. Given all that Barcelona has to offer and despite all this to write off the Madrid completely misses the point and at the end of the day it is Madrid that is at the centre of both the road and rail networks in Spain.

Yes the Catalans may praise Barcelona for the creativity and elegance of the city but to regard to Madrid is any less important purely because parts of it might need the old lick of paint is extremely superficial.

Because of its distance from the sea and its altitude, the city in deal is cold winters and hot summers, making spring and autumn the best times to visit.

Madrid’s attractions include three internationally famous art galleries, a royal palace, grand public squares and many museums filled with the treasures of Spain’s history.

Madrid as you see is very much a combination and manifestation of its historical past. Now we have to remember here that this was a major European city that for 400 years lay under the rule of North African influence, namely that of the Moors. This is reflected in the area of La Latina.

Spanish Civil War (1 of 2)

The Spanish region of Catalonia

Catalonia shares it’s northern border with the countries of Andorra and France in the mountainous Pyrenees. The Mediterranean Sea forms it eastern border with the coast running south west down as far as the region of Valencia. The eastern border is shared with the region of Aragon. Throughout history Catalonia has struggled for greater autonomy in it’s relationship with Spain. In attempts to gain full independent it has on more than occasion revolted. Few Catalonians today aspire to have any real expectations of independence but the struggle for greater autonomy within Spain continues.

History – Greeks and Romans established trade along this part of the Mediterranean coast. In the middle ages Catalan art and literature flourished and the now established coastal trade saw merchants become very powerful rivalling those of Venice and Genoa. In 1461 Catalonia rose up in protest at it’s alliance with Aragon but the rebellion was crushed. The subsequent union of Aragon with Castile side lined Catalonia. Trade routes were moved, commercial income fell, famines and plagues all contributed to it’s decline. But the Catalonian desire for independence continued. It rose against Philip IV during the thirty year war of 1618-48 and followed that by taking the side of Archduke Charles in the War of the Spanish Succession against Philip V. It was a centre for socialist influence at the turn of the 19th Century. 1931 saw the Catalans establish a separate government which went on to win autonomy from the Spanish Cortes in 1932. Two years later a revolution for complete independence failed, but in another 2 years autonomy was restored. In the Spanish civil war of 1936-39, Catalonia once again picked the wrong side and following Franco’s victory over the republicans the region suffered badly and the cherished Catalan language was banned in public life. In 1978 it was restored and is now an official language of the region along with Castilian or Spanish. It elected its first parliament as an autonomous region in 1980. By the mid-1990s Catalan nationalists had become a force in both the region’s and the nation’s politics.

Catalonia comprises four provinces, Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona and Lleida, all are named after their capitals.

Girona or Gerona in the north sits on the Onyar River. Dating from pre-Roman times, the old town has preserved its medieval aspect. Girona was ruled by the Moors from 714 to 797. During the Peninsular War of 1808-09 the town resisted the Napoleon’s French forces. Industries today include chemical production, machinery, paper making and textiles. Outside the city and on the coat the beaches and coves around Begur and Palafrugell and particularly attractive. Or take in a sunrise at the Cap de Crues, Spain’s most easterly point. Just to the south is the enchanting whitewashed village of Cadaques built around a rocky bay. The artist Salvador Dali spent the holidays of his youth there and later lived in the nearby village of Port Lligat. The barren shorelines, odd formations of rocks and desolate moonscapes so typical of his paintings can be seen in abundance throughout the locality. The Teatre-Musea Dali is located in the town of Figueres and contains a great deal of the artist’s works. The Pyrenees, in the north of the province, offer many opportunities for walking and hiking, the Parc Nacional d’Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici being one of the most attractive areas. There are several ski stations operating throughout the winter months.

There is evidence of some settlement in the area going back to the 15th century BC but Barcelona is reputed to take it’s name from the powerful Carthaginian family of Barca who founded the basis for the city as we know it today. Under the Romans and Visigoths the city flourished. In the 8th century it fell to the Moors and in 801 it was taken by Charlemagne, who included it in the Spanish March. The March became independent under the leadership of the powerful counts of Barcelona in the 9th and 10th centuries, They won lands from the Moors to the south and acquired all of Catalonia. In 1137, following the marriage of Count Raymond Berengar IV to the heiress of Aragon the two regions became united. The city of Barcelona became the capital as it was for future kings of Spain. A well ruled Barcelona expanded trade in the Mediterranean. Its cloth industry flourished and it became a powerful centre of banking and commerce. Around 1400 saw the peak in it’s fortunes, decline followed along with the rest of Catalonia. The French occupied the city on three occasions in 1640-52, 1715 and 1808-14. Catalan separatism centred on Barcelona and the city was the scene of many insurrections. It revolted against Philip IV of Spain from 1640-52. It also became the Spanish centre of socialism and other radical political doctrines around 1900. Barcelona was the capital of the region’s autonomous government from 1932-39. During the civil war the Spanish Loyalist government sat in Barcelona until it fell to Franco’s forces in early 1939. The region saw demonstrations against Franco’s dictatorship throughout the 1950’s. Today Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city and the claims to be cultural centre of the country. It is the capital of the Catalonian region and more than one third of region’s population reside there. Barcelona is also Spain’s largest port and its chief commercial centre with international banking and finance houses. It is a major industrial centre and production includes aviation, chemicals, electrical equipment, foundries, locomotives, machinery, textiles and vehicles. The city itself is modern, with wide avenues, bustling traffic and striking new architecture. By contrast the well preserved old city, Roman walls can still be seen, is filled with narrow, winding streets and ancient structures, including a cathedral, many churches, the city hall and the Lonja or exchange. Barcelona is the site of a reputed opera house, the Contemporary Art Museum, the Fine Arts Museum of Catalonia and the Picasso Museum. In 1992 it hosted the summer Olympics. The remainder of the province of Barcelona is in the main hilly or mountainous. But it also home to some highly fertile plains where cereals grapes and olives are grown. The province also produces one third of Spain’s wine. Much of the area’s power is generated by hydroelectric plants built on the Ebro, Cinca and Segre rivers. The coastline, stretching nearly 400 kilometres has many good harbours and marinas, excellent fisheries and an buoyant tourist trade. West of Barcelona you will find the vineyards of the Penedes area. Also the mountain of Montserrat, on a clear day the peak at 1236m above sea level offers views of the Pyrenees to the north and to Mallorca in the Balearic Islands to the south east.

Tarragona sits on the mouth of the river Francola on the Mediterranean. It was formally known as Tarraco and in 218BC was captured by Roman forces. They built up is fortifications against attack by the Carthaginians. The ruins of Roman walls and an aquaduct remain still. It fell to both the Visigoths and the Moors in the 5th and 8th centuries respectively. The Christians recaptured it in the 12th century but when it’s trade was captured by either regions Barcelona or Valencia it fell into decline. In 1903 Carthusian monks settled in the city having been expelled from La Grande Chartreuse in France. Their famous liqueur is produced here to this day. Today it is important as both a commercial centre and port. Industries include flour mills, an oil refinery and wine production and export. Some of the countries finest wines are made nearby in the Priorat region.

Lleida lies on the river Segre. Formally known as Llerda, Julius Ceasar defeated the generals of Pompey here in 49 BC. The Moorish invasion from the south saw Lleida fall in 714. It was liberated by Christian forces in 1149. By tradition a strategic, fortified city, Lleida became a key defence point for Barcelona in the Spanish civil war. It eventually fell to Franco’s forces in the April of 1938 having withheld for nine long months. A castle, whose ramparts enclose a Romanesque cathedral, dominates the old section of the city. Lleida is the centre of a fertile farm area and agriculture predominates. There is little in the way of a manufacturing industry.

The Avant-garde Movement is said to be the most controversial period of art in France. It was characterized by a deviance from the norm and a pushing of boundaries in social and political issues. They adapted the French term avant-garde as it refers to a group of soldiers who were usually sent ahead of a larger troop in battle to scout for danger. Avant-garde artists aimed to challenge and tear down the status quo. They stood out against social norms and challenged traditional establishment.

Some of the most renowned artists in history belonged to this movement. Museums and art shops still offer postcards and posters of their work to meet popular demands. Other art print fans view and print online postcards. Customers can print these postcards online, choosing from a variety of standard or customized options.

Popular avant-garde artwork that pushed artistic bounds came from Spanish Surrealist painter, Joan Miro. Miro’s work was said to an abstract form of art that combined whimsy and harsh reality. Throughout his life, the artist extensively produced lithographs, murals, tapestries and public sculpture. After earlier Art Nouveau influences from Antoni Gaudi, Fauvism’s Paul Cezanne and Cubism, the artist began to seek and express individual symbols of the subjects he was painting. His paintings portrayed dream-like images and unconscious scenes. As a result, his work, according to art critics, had more in common with the Surrealists and Dadaists. Although typically apathetic to social causes, the Spanish Civil War profoundly affected his art. Another which seemed to express his reaction against the war was a woman’s horrific expression in Head of a Woman, painted in 1938.

It is about international assistance for the Spanish Republicans.

The guy on the right represents the International Brigades. The red Star-Trekky emblem is the symbol of the International Brigades. These were units of foreign volunteers who fought for the Republicans.

The guy on the left represents the ordinary Spanish Republican soldiers. He has a red, yellow and purple armband that corresponds to the colours of the Spanish Republican flag.

The “guy” in the background is acually a gal. I believe it is the same gal who is holding a big torch over NYC: the Roman goddess Liberty. She is holding a laurel wreath, the symbol of victory.

The Spanish isn’t difficult even if (like me) you don’t speak the language.

Low Literacy and Bible Engagement
Some of the people groups represented by these Audio Bibles have significantly low literacy rates.

For example, among those who speak Quechua San Martín, only 10% of the people can read their own language. In Nigeria, among Izere speakers, a mere 1% can read. To these and similar people groups, the truths and hope of Scripture are locked away in the written form.

Morgan Jackson, Faith Comes By Hearing’s international director, said these statistics show the great need for God’s Word in a format people can use—audio.

Faith Comes By Hearing’s mission is to record the New Testament in 2,000 languages and to start 1.8 million Bible listening groups by 2016 to reach the 50% of the world who cannot read and live in deep poverty.

Audio Bibles for Poor and Illiterate People
Jackson said one of the first stories that captured his heart and highlighted the need for Audio Bibles for poor and illiterate people came from missionaries who distributed Spanish printed Bibles in Mexico.

“One of the missionaries on this trip looked over and saw a woman sitting on a bench with the Bible open on her head,” he said. “She was just sobbing, so the missionary sat beside her, and through her tears, he tried to get her to explain what was wrong. She kept sobbing, and finally told him that she couldn’t read. She told him she knew that in that book were the words of life for her and her family. She said she was praying for God to take those words from the pages and put them into her heart.”

From remote, rugged locations to thriving urban centers, this story is common. Half the world—roughly three billion people—is unable to read.

“All over the world there’s a hunger to use these recordings because so many of the people don’t read,” Jackson said. “Please help us reach the poor and illiterate people with God’s Word in audio.”

I would like to make my husband’s parents a scapbook of my son’s first year, but I can’t find any of the fun stickers and papers and vellum in Spanish that I have found in English. (They live in another country and speak only spanish). Has anyone had any luck with online shopping? Or any stores that sell them out there?
