These games are so in depth and fun to play, that kids are literally learning Spanish quicker than they would in a traditional classroom setting, and are often playing them without you even asking them too. 2) Visual Tools to Teach Kids Spanish

The second tip is to make sure you are using as much visual property as possible. This means images to go along with the words and phrases. Remember the old flashcards that we used to use in school? Would I be putting too much on my 2.5 yr old if I enrolled him in two different foreign language classes?

My grandmothers church is offering Chinese and Spanish classes for toddlers. I want my son to learn a second language and I know that now is a critical time for language development and the best time to introduce a new language is at a young age. Chinese is the number one language spoken and Spanish is second. I want him to do both if at all possible. Any suggestions?
He is really a smart kid and speaks very clearly. We always get compliments on how well he speaks. I dont want to push him or stress him out. I just want to expose him because the world is shrinking. We have many Spanish and Chinese speaking people that have settled in our area over the last few years for some reason. We know people from China as well as other various parts of the world. I just want to give him every oppertunity I can.

At 2.5 yrs old, he is going through something called “the language explosion” which means that his brain is accepting the structure of his first language. I grew up in a tri-lingual home and I learned all three at the same time. However, it was by using it with my different grandparents in a natural way. At 4 I started English and Russian in kindergarden. (I now speak 7 & learning #8 and I have a degree in Linguistics) If you are considering sending him to the church language program, I assume it’s kind of a play and sing type of program without too much emphasis on formal language structure. Besides, at this age their attention span is fairly minimal anyway. I would suggest that you put him into both IF it’s treated like a fun activity based type of program with lots of age appropriate content. If it is not, I would choose only 1. One more thing. Do not be surprised if he exhibits something called interlanguage (the mixing of all languages in one sentence – that’s how the brain works) and if he backslides on his English for a while. Make sure that he has fun first and foremost. If at some point he starts to really not want to go then I would take him out at that time so he doesn’t develop a dislike for the sounds of those languages which could be happily resumed at a later date. One evening, Brenda was in the basement with the rest of the family and wanted to watch one of her shows without too many interruptions, which is a rare event these days. Frankly, I don’t know what she was thinking.

During the fifth or sixth interruption Sydney, who was pretending to be a doctor, wanted Brenda to pretend to be sick. Brenda said, “I want to finish watching this show first, then I’ll be sick.”

Sydney walked away and informed Doctor Ashley that “Mommy will be sick in twenty minutes.”

Lately, Brenda’s abdomen has been quite sore due to the fibroids that will be coming out soon.

A couple of days ago Sydney asked Brenda if her tummy still hurt. Brenda, proudly thinking that her daughter was concerned for her welfare, replied, “No, my tummy isn’t hurting today.”

With relief in her voice, Sydney says, “Good, then you can clean up our mess and pick us up.”

Brenda was getting the girls settled in the car after school and was setting up her computer so they could watch a DVD on the way home. She was having some difficulty with the computer (and with the girls) and said, “I’m trying play your dvd so you’ll stop driving me crazy.”

Then she discovered that the dvd was not in the computer (it had been taken out at home) and said, “Oh no, there’s no movie!’

Ashley, quite shocked and serious, said, “OH NO! We’ll have to keep nagging you!”

One day Sydney and Ashley were playing together and something happened between them, who knows exactly what, but the outcome was that Sydney became quite upset.

Montessori kids are notorious for learning how to put things away, at least in their classroom. Sometimes I wish that it translated a little better at home where their favorite activity is ‘making a BIG pile.’ However, one evening Sydney was walking around the basement putting toys away and gathering up cups and dishes onto one table. I asked her what she was doing and she replied, “I’m trying to clean up this house. It’s a mess!”

Ashley was sitting on Brenda’s lap and announced, “I have to poop. Do you care about it?”

We were having a difficult time getting Ashley to quiet down during our pre-bedtime routine in the basement prior to going up upstairs. She began to throw one of her lovely fits, so I took her upstairs to go to bed early. I tried to get her to brush her teeth, but she put both hands over her mouth and revved up the fit a notch. So I took her into her bedroom and wrestled her out of her clothes and into her pj’s, then put her into bed. She tried to get out of bed, so I laid there with her with my arm around her. I gave her options … keep crying and stay in bed, or stop throwing a fit, brush your teeth, and we might be able to go back downstairs. She continued to pitch a memorable fit and told me, “Daddy, if you don’t stop holding me, I’m going to keep crying. Forever!”

I am continually amazed at the words the girls are using at 3 years old, especially ones that we haven’t taught them,

Sydney was dressing herself as a “princess” using a rather eclectic assortment of garments … jelly shoes with pink fuzz, a red apron that Mom gave her, a pink boa, sunglasses, and a red scarf on top of her head. After she got herself all put together she asked me, “Do I look distinguished?”

At school the girls were walking in the hallway with Brenda. They rounded a corner and almost ran into someone. Ashley exclaimed, “You startled me!”

I had put the girls down for a nap in the basement and was upstairs taking the garbage out to the garage. I heard the girls tromping upstairs and calling for me. I came back in the house, but couldn’t tell if they were in the kitchen or had gone up to the second floor. I went into the kitchen calling for them and they came back downstairs from the 2nd floor and into the kitchen and were a bit upset that they couldn’t find me. I told them that I was right here in the kitchen. Ashley said, “We looked for you in here but I didn’t see any sign of you.”

We were all camped out in the basement one evening well past the girls’ bedtime. We finally started upstairs and I asked Ashley if she was tired. As she stumbled groggily up the stairs she replied, “Yes, Daddy. I’m very tired. The eyes on my legs are going to sleep.”

One afternoon Brenda took the girls over to our new house, which is still being worked on, to play on the new playset we have there. After playing for a long time, Sydney was tramping back up the hill to the driveway when she lost her balance and spun around back down the hill. She exclaimed, “Mommy, my legs are going back to the playset!”

I was driving the girls home from school and Ashley told me that she wanted “lots of toys.” I said, “You already have lots of toys.” And she said, “I want lots and lots of toys.” I told her, “You don’t need lots of toys. Some children don’t have any toys at all.” She seemed surprised by this and asked, “But Why?” And I explained that some parents did not have enough money to buy toys. “But Why?” So, trying to be a good Montessori parent I explained that some parents may not have a good job or any job at all. “Buy Why?” Well, they might be sick or may have lost their job or just can’t find a good job. To which my little angel said, “Daddy, can we take some of my toys to their house?” I said, “That’s a great idea!” And she thought about it a little and said, “Daddy, that’s helping!” .. then Sydney piped up and said, “That’s sharing!”

It makes the occasional fall-on-the-floor, kicking and whining fits a little more bearable.

Brenda brought the girls home from school one day, and as usual, asked, “Did you have fun today at school?” To which Ashley pouted and replied, “No! I cried and ate boogers.”

Brenda was running very late to school and her work one morning. As she was driving in the car with the girls she said, “I’m SO late I just want to cry.” Sydney says, “I’ll cry with you.” and then Ashley joins in, “I’ll cry, too.”

I was watching tv with the girls in the basement and had brought them a snack on little plates. Sydney finished hers and put her plate on the couch between us. I asked her, “Please put your plate on the table at the end of the couch.” She refused a couple of times, even suggesting that I should do it. I finally said, “I want YOU to do it, Sydney.” She got this little exasperated look on her face, grabbed the plate and said “ALLLWight!” She marched over to the table, put the plate down, then stood in the middle of the room with her little hands balled up into fists, eyes closed and proclaimed to the entire house, “You’re making me CRAZY!”

The girls are very into the ‘Care Bears’ right now. Brenda was driving them to school one day and the girls started talking about which Bears they wanted to be. Ashley said she wanted to be Love-a-Lot bear. Brenda asked, “What bear would Mommy be?” .. Sydney pipes up and says “Grumpy Bear!”

I went to a produce stand with Winnie (Brenda’s mom) and the girls and bought some corn and tomatoes. I spotted some melons about the size of a cantaloupe called “Sweet Sugar Babies”, I think. It sounded interesting, they cost $6 each, but I bought one anyway. After everyone got home that evening, I was in the basement watching TV. I don’t know the details of the conversation between Winnie and Brenda, but I do know it was about the melon. Ashley came downstairs, gave me a big hug, and said, “Daddy, I love you … Have you lost your mind?”

One of the best features about the Brookline community is its diversity.  Multiple cultures and languages co-exist within a relatively small space.

It is common within the community for some children entering daycare in Brookline to already speak more than one language within their families.  This may lead parents to wonder if exposure to another language is beneficial. In fact, the wider the exposure to new languages, the greater the benefit to the child.

No matter if they are exposed to one or multiple languages at home, young children still benefit greatly from a Spanish bilingual education. At a young age, children are most responsive and sensitive to languages.  As a result, Brookline daycare that includes multi-lingual education is an ideal setting for language enrichment.  What’s more, there is no limit to the amount of language study a child can absorb or how greatly they benefit.

Spanish bilingual education can greatly benefit children throughout their lives on so many levels.  When considering any child care center, Brookline families are well-served by placing their youngster in such an enriched learning environment.

What are the best educational TV shows for children ages 4 and 7?

What do you think are the best educational TV shows for children ages 4 and 7 to teach reading and spelling. I grew up on the Electric Company, which was written for the sole purpose of teaching kids how to read and spell. I don’t know of any similar shows on TV today. I know Dora the Explorer teaches kids How To Speak Spanish, and Blues Clues teach kids how things match up. Seseme Street is always a winner when comes to educating kids. BUT, all three of those are geared towards the younger toddlers, 2 through 5 year olds. As they get older they start to loose interest and want something more with a plot or even little variety skits.

Shows to help build Vocabulary are Pinky-Dinky Doo and Word Girl, but they are geared more towards girl viewers.

Have any of you had experience with teaching your children multiple languages?

Am having difficulties with this. I speak English and Spanish, hubbie only speaks English. I’d like to be able to incorporate Speaking Spanish to her, but since my husband and I only communicate in English, it’s quite difficult for me to do this. I’ve got DVD’s and some books, but that just isn’t getting us very far, other than learning a few vocabulary words here and there. I need more ideas.

My kids are still toddlers, so I’m not at that point yet.

However, the way I’m going to go about this is to teach my kids to reply in the same language they’re asked.

If someone asks you a question in English, you reply in English. If someone asks you a question in Chinese, you reply in Chinese.

It will be important to expose your kid to as much Spanish as possible.
Kids sometimes only reply to you in English, because that’s the language they’re most comfortable with (that’s what they’re taught in school).

So if you really want your kid to be fluent in Spanish, you’ll need to alphabetize him/her.
