Should I learn Spanish or any other language?

Hi, I have always wanted to learn a foreign language. I Like Spanish, French and Italian. I started learning French but gave up after a month after seeing that I wasn’t really heading anywhere. I am interested in conversational learning.

To your title quesetion: Yes.

Spanish easier than French? No. They are pretty much the same. French is a bit tougher at first, but when you get into the more advanced levels of Spanish, you run into some more complicated stuff.

It sounds like two things happened:

A) you wound up in a class that wasn’t taught to your learning style and/or your interests.

B) you gave up WAY too soon!

You want something modern/communicative…a class that is totally grammar driven is probably not going to appeal to you. Try going to livemocha.com. As you go along, you’ll probably find you DO need some more grammar, so go to About.com for that piece…search language name…”Spanish Language“, and there’s some grammar and worksheets to practice.

There are other courses out there, but this is a good one to start with, especially if you want conversation-driven course.

I am taking spanish tutoring once a week with a group of 4 people including myself. we want to learn conversational spanish and learn things quickly. we aren’t so much interested in grammar and such for now. we would just like to improve vocab and verb conjugations. rather than spend the whole class talking and going through conjunctions, preps. and so forth. any ideas?

Ok, two advices. First, READ. It will help you improve your sintaxis and verb conjugation without effort. It is amazing.

Second,for pronunciation, listen to Spanish news and programs, (news preferably from CNN where they barely have an accent. And talk a lot. With yourself, if you just. Makes you improve lots.

Best place to Learn Spanish In Latin America?

I’m a teacher looking to hone my Conversational Spanish over the summer and I’d like some input from experienced travelers on cities (and even language schools) to look at. My fiancée would be travelling with me and we’d like to avoid Mexico as she lived there for much of her life and we’ve traveled in that county a good bit over the last few years. Also Spain (or at least Madrid as she lived there for part of her life also) is somewhere we’d like to avoid. A location with some history, either colonial or pre-colombian, would be great. My fiancée would love to be near the beach, and obviously we’d like somewhere safe. We’ve kicked around the idea of the Dominican Republic; Cartagena, Colombia; or maybe even Equador. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer.

I would HIGHLY recommend Quito, Ecuador after spending six weeks in language school there last summer. Interestingly enough, I too had travelled to Mexico multiple times before finally deciding to broaden my horizons by going to a new country. I have no regrets! Quito’s colonial section was named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, and the the beautiful Mount Pichincha right next to the city makes the area quite scenic. You will also be in a capital city, meaning you will be in an area with cultural and political importance to the country you are visiting. Quito is also a nice medium size city that is big enough to have plenty of offer but no so large as to be overwhelming. The high altitude means the climate will be moderate, with cool mornings and evenings and a warm midday. Near Quito, you can even take a visit to the Equator! The Spanish spoken in Quito is quite clear, and the accent did not seem difficult to me as someone very accustomed to Mexican Spanish. You might find it clearer than a Caribbean accent. I did not get to much of the rest of the country, but from I understand Ecuador has much to offer in other parts of the country too if you have time and money to travel around it. You have jungle wilderness in the interior, more history and tradition down in the city of Cuenca, the beach over near Guayaquil, and of course the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. Granted, you may not have large amerindian pyramids here, but on most other counts you have a little bit of everything right in this beautiful little country!

Learn Spanish with Learning Spanish Like Crazy

When speaking about communication, the larger your vocabulary, the more you know, and the easier it will be to get across what you want to communicate. One of the most common questions that people have is how to increase this number. This is a particular problem with Spanish learners, and there is a tendency to learn a new list of words, and then promptly forget them just a quick. The question is, what is the best way to increase ones Spanish Vocabulary without going nuts?

The answer is not that simple, but there are some tips and tricks for helping your new vocabulary stick more efficiently.

Tip number 1…READ!

You would be surprised at how easy it is to find newspapers, magazines and other literature in Spanish these days. Whatever you do, avoid textbooks at all costs. They are boring and will suck all of the life-force motivation out of you in about 10 seconds. Magazines are the most fun, and the trick is to read and try to figure out the meaning of new words by the context they are written in. Magazines also have pictures, which can assist greatly in this. Try and keep your Spanish Dictionary away also. These tend to do the same thing as textbooks do. Instead, make a list of new words to look up, and do it once or twice a week all at once.

Tip number 2…Use the words!

Yes it can be difficult, but use those new words you are learning. Otherwise, why bother. There are more things in life that are more fulfilling than wasting time. Make a goal of using a new word at least 10 times during the day. Don’t worry if you make a ton of mistakes using them either, who cares! Remember the 10 times a day rule? This brings us to tip number three.

Tip number 3… Engage in conversations!

Find another student, and preferably, a native Spanish speaker to converse with. If you have ever heard of something called “total immersion”, this is what it is. Only speaking the foreign language, this is by far the most effective way to retain new words. Go on Facebook and make some friends with people in a Spanish Speaking country and start conversing either by email or messaging. Anything you can do to use your skills will improve your vocabulary.

These three tips alone should help your Spanish vocabulary improve rather quickly, but be careful not to get caught up in the I-am-building-my-vocabulary mania. Do not cram your brain with stuff you do not really need to know. If you are learning for a specific purpose, concentrate on the vocabulary which fits that purpose. At the end of the day though, you must make it fun or game over!

It sounds really great and I tried their free sample lessons and liked them. However, their website looks more than doubtful. Also, they advertise on their front page they include the FSI programs for free, but then when you go to check out they don’t mention them at all. Has anyone orederd directly from the learning spanish like crazy website? If so, what was your experience?

I wouldn’t advise it, 1/2 of them are scams or aren’t helpful in the long run. Best advice Learn Spanish In school by a tutor, or from a book with a dvd.

Ways to learn some quick, conversational spanish?

I work at an organization that offers clothes, food and education assistance to those who need it. Probably 95% of people I deal with daily are spanish. I have a translator that stays with me, but often times I think it would be easier if I just knew a little spanish to help other people or to help myself when my translator is not with me. I don’t want to spend a great deal of money on lessons or software to learn. So, any suggestions?

I used BYKI (free from here: http://omniglossia.com/courses/transparent-spanish ) to pick up basic vocabulary. The deluxe version has over 2,500 words, but you need their other courses to get into reading of texts and understanding linked spoken language.

I also found a free ebook with over 2,000 cognates in Spanish/English that is a great start (makes you realise how much you actually know without studying a thing!) – it’s listed on the Squidoo site I mentioned above too (http://squidoo.com/spanish-is-easier-than-you-think ).

And finally even though you’re keen on a course, for a really quick initiation you could try courses by Fluency Fast. It’s my favourite for learning quickly and getting confidence in the language.
