Spanish podcasts – the power of voice

<!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } A.western:link { so-language: zxx } A.ctl:link { so-language: zxx } –>

It is difficult to keep up with all the new technology that appears almost daily on the Internet, but some becomes popular almost instantly. Podcasting is one of them. Every kid now knows how to download podcasts to their computers or their iPods, mostly their favorite songs. But, there is a much more exciting use for podcasting, and that is using it to learn foreign languages like Spanish. Spanish podcasts are now crucial part of most high quality Spanish tutors.

What makes learning foreign languages so intimidating is the pronunciation. Spanish Language Books are full of rules on how to pronounce words, and we can learn the rules, but when we try to say the words, we get in trouble. But, just imagine if you could get all your Spanish Lessons by listening to them, instead of reading them? That is what Spanish podcasts are for.

Podcasts are audio files, which we can subscribe for and download the files we want to our computers and listen whenever we feel for it. Most popular format is mp3. So, if you want To Learn Spanish by listening to the way it really sounds, all you have to do is find a good website, like News in Slow Spanish (www.newsinslowspanish.com), download Spanish podcasts and get your lessons spoken by a native Spanish speaker.

There is a number of websites offering Spanish podcasts, allowing students to learn the language by listening to the way native people speak it and use it in their everyday lives. But, of course, not all websites are the same, so you have to find one that will excite you and trigger your interest not only in the language but in the way of life, culture, current events, music and food. News in Slow Spanish has weekly Spanish podcasts with new lessons which describe current events and news worldwide.

One delight in Learning Spanish by listening to the Spanish podcasts is the diversity of pronunciation in different provinces in Spain, or different Spanish-speaking countries. Just when you think you learned to pronounce a word properly, like a well-educated person from Madrid, you discover that people in Mexico say is very differently. Sort of like listening to the English from London or Sidney. It is just a little bit different. But, different is fun, and as long as we have fun, we will keep working on it. You will never get bored with learning Spanish with Spanish podcasts, because you can always download a new lesson, or a new story, and add few new words to your vocabulary. Until you realize that you actually understand everything you are listening!

You do not need any special hardware or software to listen to the podcasts. Most of us just download them to our computers from the website like News in Slow Spanish, using Windows Media Player, or I-Tunes. You can then download those files to your MP3 players or iPods and listen to your Fun Spanish podcast lessons wherever you are, whenever you feel for it. Don’t forget to download some songs as well, to get into the spirit of the language. If you are not into beautiful old Spanish Songs, get some Reggeaton. There is something for every taste.

News In Slow Spanish has helped many students gain self-confidence and achieve quick and lasting results. Visit the show’s website www.NewsInSlowSpanish.com and see for yourself why creators of the program have chosen this motto: You know Spanish more than you think!

books for teaching really young kids/babies Spanish?

My sister just gave my sister-in-law and her husband a little book for their daughter. It’s for teaching little kids French and it has all these illustrations and simple little phrases. It’s cute. I really want one just like it but I didn’t get to look at it so Idk the author/title, zilch! I’m looking for a Spanish version. Have you heard of any books like this???

Yes – bookstores in Mexico are full of them and I would imagine there are lots in southern California as well. Have you tried googling ‘early education in Spanish’ to see what’s out there?

Are Readers Important To Authors Or What

Bestselling authors speak of their fans in almost reverential tones, as well they should. A loyal readership that comes back for more, book after book, is the real key to long-term publishing success. Savvy authors work diligently to produce great work that will continue to please their audience, but many of them also communicate directly to their fans. Author’s web sites are all the rage, some of them quite elaborately produced.

Fauzia Burke is the founder and President of FSB Associates, http://www.fsbassciates.com. Her company specializes in publicity utilizing the Internet and author websites.

We asked Fauzia: What is the most unusual publicity program you’ve developed? “We’re proud of our ability to harness all the power of the Web in the service of authors and their books, and we’re especially committed to making the online presence fit the project.

Here are some examples: “Our site for Doug Stanton’s In Harm’s Way goes beyond words and pictures to include audio interviews with survivors of the 1945 sinking of the USS Indianapolis, video clips of the actual rescue at sea, and a discussion board. Our campaign introduced the book to many audiences, from World War II vets and history buffs, to college and high school students.

“For Christopher Rice’s supernatural thriller A Density Of Souls, we used animation and graphics to create an online gathering place that echoes the eerie atmosphere of the book, and added exclusive material like a virtual yearbook from the New Orleans high school of the story, and back-story on the characters. We even helped promote Chris’s appearance on MTV’s Real World.

“We used cutting-edge animated maps in our site for Rick Atkinson’s Pulitzer Prize winner An Army At Dawn, to illustrate critical points in the Allied assault on German-held North Africa in 1942-43. Animation helps bring alive our site for Tony Horwitz’s Blue Latitudes, combining a sea chart that traces the voyages of Captain Cook with excerpts from corresponding passages in the book.

“But we don’t use bells and whistles for their own sake. Our site for Mitch Albom’s novel The Five People You Meet In Heaven called for a simpler approach that lets the warm story and the wonderful writing take center stage. Because this is the kind of book people love to share, there’s an e-postcard that fans can send to their friends. There are teaching guides, and reading group materials, and a Q&A with Mitch. And for the Spanish Edition of the book, we’ve created a Spanish-language site that will help broaden the audience even more.

“For all these books, we also waged word-of-mouth campaigns designed to attract attention, site traffic and media coverage. In the end, these coordinated efforts produced the most satisfying of all results – sales.”

Quite a few author websites are just storefronts whose major purpose is to sell books. Others have a much more intimate feel, inviting visitors to: “Come on in and meet me. Stay and chat.” With all the other pressures on their time, why do bestselling authors go to the trouble of answering fan e-mail, or posting responses to message boards on their web sites, and continually upgrading them with information about their new project or where they will be appearing?

Nicholas Sparks, www.nicholassparks.com, whose first book, The Notebook set a new standard for romance, answers the question: You interact with your fans more that many authors do. Your web site is particularly interactive, with message boards and an e-mail address for fans to reach you. Why did you take this approach? “People have so many questions about my novels or want to know about me, and there’s a lot of misinformation out there. I wanted to have the correct answers put up where readers could easily access them. The web site is a way to make sure the truth is getting out there. For instance, the question, Where did I get the idea for The Notebook? If I say it was inspired by my wife’s grandparents, this is very much the truth, but not much information. Readers want to know more: How was it inspired? In what way? How did that whole thought process work? So I explained the whole situation so the readers understand.”

Does that interaction encourage the word of mouth buzz about your books? “Maybe a little. But not everyone cares about what an author’s life is like. They just want to read a good book.”

Anna Jacobs, http://www.annajacobs.com, has written 29 novels, mostly historical sagas and romances. She resides in Australia, her primary publisher is in the United Kingdom and her books are sold worldwide including the United States.

We asked Anna: Romance authors seem to have a more personal relationship with their fans, interacting with them on web sites, message boards, Internet chats, book readings. Why is that? What does an author learn from this interaction that assists her with her work? “I’m not sure it’s just romance authors. I think it’s a woman’s approach. I happen to believe that if you put something back into the universe it will bring good karma. Or as my daughter puts it: What goes around, comes around. But I also keep in touch with readers because if you can ‘attach’ readers as well as writing good books (the latter is the prime pre-requisite) they go out and talk about your books to others.

“I learn a lot from readers’ emails about what has particularly pleased them. That doesn’t hurt. Also writing is a very solitary activity, so it’s nice to be in touch with others. And we all need feedback and praise. I’m as human as any other. I love to hear that someone has enjoyed my books. It’s much more fun than sales figures.”

Susan Elizabeth Phillips, www.susanelizabethphillips.com, is the only five-time winner of the Romance Writers of America Favorite Book of the Year Award; inducted into the Romance Writers Hall of Fame, 2001- pioneered, and some say, perfected the “romantic comedy” school of fiction. writes with a touch of humor. We asked Susan: You seem to interact quite a bit with your readers through your web site. You even mentioned there were several categories of fans you have, those who enjoy the humor in your books and those who are more attuned to what happens to the characters. How does the fan interaction shape your writing? “I love my readers, but I do my best not to let their comments shape my writing in any way. About ten years ago, the light finally went off in my brain and I truly understood that every book I wrote would be somebody’s favorite and somebody’s least favorite, that everybody in the world (gasp) wasn’t going to like my books. This was intensely liberating. It told me that to do my best work I concentrate only on pleasing myself. Truly the biggest ‘Aha Moment’ of my career.”

It’s not only romance authors that have their own website, Stuart Woods, http://www.stuartwoods.com, writes hard hitting mysteries and has been on the New York Times Bestseller list many times.

Stuart answers the question: You are one of the bestselling authors who regularly corresponds with readers via e-mail, why? “It gives me a direct kind of feedback. I get a sense that what I’m doing is the right thing to do. I’ve never made any changes in what I do because of what I’ve heard from readers. The vast preponderance of people love the books and write to tell me so.”

And it’s not just the household name authors who value their readers.

Lydia Joyce’s, www.lydiajoyce.com, most recent book is “The Veil of Night” an intense, sensual remaking of the Gothic genre, with a mysterious Duke, a crumbling manor, and an older heroine with her own secrets to hide.

Lydia told us: “To be absolutely crass, if I didn’t have fans, I couldn’t make money. And if I couldn’t make money, writing would be a hobby, not a job!

“But fans are important to me for far more than financial reasons. My desire to become a writer started with the ghost stories I used to tell around Girl Scouts campfires. I loved how I could affect other people, how I could thrill them, excite them, and make them care about the people in my tales. The pleasure that other people get from my storytelling is a major motivator for me. If it weren’t for that, I could be perfectly happy to leave my stories in my head where they started.”

Lynne Connolly is the author of the Richard and Rose series of books, romantic suspense novels set in the mid eighteenth century. Her latest book, “Harley Street” came out in March, and pits the new Lord and Lady Strang against their deadly enemies, Julia and Steven Drury in a tale of old transgressions come to test new found love.

We asked Lynne: Why are your fans important to you as an author? “They validate my work, tell me that I’m on the right track. Fans aren’t unthinking admirers, and can often give you information you never had before. Their encouragement keeps me going, and presenting my work to publishers and agents with confidence. Economically, they buy the books, making it possible for me to write more and for my publisher to continue having confidence in me. I sit at home all day on my own with a keyboard for company. Fans connect me, help me to keep on target. And a fan is a reader. They complete the link, the communication between writer and reader.

Marjorie Jones’s, www.majoriejones.com, “The Jewel and the Sword” was just released by Medallion Press. She tells us fans are important to her because “For me, fans are the end-all-be-all of the writing experience. Finishing a book is a terrific feeling. Selling that book to a publisher is an amazing feeling. Having that book accepted by the reading public is better than both! Why are they important? Because without them, my stories would float indefinitely inside the walls of my hard-drive. No purpose. No reason for being. Fans give the stories life.”

Take a few minutes this summer and find out a little bit more about your favorite author. If you really enjoyed their last book, let them know. They would like to hear from you.

Is there a novel based around the Spanish Armada’s attempted invasion of England in 1588 ?

Ideally one with romance, espionage, twists and resolution.

One of my favourite movie stars is Vivien Leigh who appeared in a 1937 film “Fire Over England” with Laurence Olivier. This was based on the novel by A.E.W. Mason with same title. I checked IMDb database and this is the writeup:

Queen Elizabeth is running this show. The men in her court should be thinking about how to add to the glory of the Elizabethan Age and how to foil those pesky Spanish who got far too much influence in England when her older sister Mary was on the throne after their father Henry VIII was succeeded by their sickly half brother. Elizabeth thinks Michael Ingolby can do great things. Michael is mostly thinking about one of Elizabeth’s ladies in waiting, Cynthia. Soon his mind is on survival when Elizabeth sends him on a voyage to Spain. Written by Dale O’Connor {daleoc@interaccess.com}
In 1588, relations between Spain and England are at the breaking point. British sea raiders regularly capture Spanish merchantmen bringing gold from the New World with the support of Queen Elizabeth I. After a plot to depose her is discovered, she enlists Michael Ingolby, whose father was killed by the Inquisition, to go undercover and infiltrate the court of Philip of Spain. Masquerading as one of the traitors, Ingolby finds the names of British subjects in Spanish pay. He identifies the would-be assassins and discovers their plans to send the Armada against England. His feats earn Ingolby the love of a Spanish noblewoman, an English courtesan, and Queen Elizabeth herself as he takes the British fleet into battle. At the climax he leads a night attack on the Armada ships massed off the coast of England. Written by Fiona Kelleghan {fkelleghan@aol.com}

How To Learn Spanish Books

There are many Spanish Learning programs online including some free ones. However, the free ones are often out-of-date and dull, and the pay-for-a-service ones often have an obscure face and intimidating high price.

How to find the best and cost-efficient Spanish learning program?

Rocket Spanish is not a scam it is a good choice as it provides free trials plus a full money back guarantee.

Similar Spanish learning products also can be found on the market.

Rosetta Stone has similar teaching methods to Rocket Spanish but targets advanced language learners and it is more expensive, three or four times the price of Rocket Spanish.

Another course is the Pimsleur Spanish which is an old-fashioned listening program, with an exceptionally high price, almost nine times of that of Rocket Spanish.

The Panama Canal – American Era History at Its Best

The building of the Panama Canal marked the beginning of a new era in American history. America had arrived as a world power, and the Canal was an important demonstration, and component that power.

The story of the building of the Panama Canal should be required reading in our schools. It is a story of magnificent planning, ingenuity, hard work, and dedication.

Until I, myself, read about the building of the Panama Canal, I had no idea what a grand accomplishment it was, and still is. In MY modern era, i.e., the 21st Century, where I see small mountains leveled in a matter of weeks, I didn’t realize that even in this day and age, the building of such a canal would still be a monumental task.

And that is not even the whole story. The conquering of Malaria, and Yellow Fever, themselves, is an accomplishment beyond compare, and is a story unto itself.

The numbers are staggering. In digging what is known as the Culebra Cut (through Culebra Mountain), 96 million cubic yards of dirt was removed; and over 19 million pounds of dynamite was used on the Cut, alone.

While a canal across the isthmus of Panama was envisioned by many, it was the French who actually planned and began excavating a canal in 1882.

Ferdinand de Lesseps, credited with building the Suez Canal in Egypt, was the moving force behind the effort to build a canal at Panama. He felt that a canal could be built and operated through private financing, rather than by the French government.

Though he was not an engineer, he insisted that a sea-level canal be built, as was Suez, rather than a canal with locks. This proved to be a grave mistake, and after several years of excavation, in 1885, design changes were made which added a single lock to the canal.

At Suez, the canal was built at sea-level because the ground is at sea-level. At Panama, this meant creating a small valley by cutting through Culebra Mountain. The task of creating the “Culebra Cut”, as it was known, proved to be grossly underestimated, and that, along with lack of financial backing, and over 20,000 deaths attributed to disease (Yellow Fever and Malaria), eventually led to the failure of the French company, and the French effort, in 1889.

A new French company was formed in 1894, in a vain attempt to complete the canal.

At the same time, America had been investigating the possibility of building a canal. In 1899, a commission eventually recommended building a lock canal in Nicaragua, instead of Panama. President McKinley was prepared to sign a bill to begin construction of the canal, however, he was assassinated in 1901, before he could sign the bill.

His predecessor, Theodore Roosevelt, was also an advocate of building a canal, and was especially keen on such a project after a well-publicized incident during the Spanish War in which an American battleship, the Oregon, had to make a two-month trip around South America, from San Francisco, to join the war (which was nearly over). A canal was necessary if America was to assert it’s power, and engage the world community.

It seemed that a canal was going to be built at Nicaragua. It had backing from politicians, and regular citizens, alike. It seemed that the die was cast, until the new French company offered to sell their holding’s at Panama for 40 million dollars, instead of their original asking price of 100 million dollars.

The lower price made the construction of a canal at Panama more practical than at Nicaragua. It took a major effort to change the minds of Americans, and gain support for a Panama Canal, but, eventually, in 1902, funding was authorized to build the canal at Panama.

The American era construction of the canal did not begin until 1904. In the meantime, the United States attempted to negotiate an agreement with Colombia to build a canal in the province of Panama. But negotiating with the unstable, and ever-changing, Colombian government proved to be impossible. In 1903, Panama declared it’s independence from Colombia, with the backing of American military might. In 1904, the American congress ratified a treaty with the new government of Panama that opened the door to construction of the Panama Canal. The history of Panama was forever tied to American era history.

The Panama Canal construction began in 1904, and was officially completed in August of 1914. The fact that the canal has endured for over 92 years is a testament to the skill of its builders; one only needs to see pictures of the lock gates, then, and now, to know that they are meant last.

The engineering and construction of the canal, even by modern-day standards, is a marvel beyond compare. It no doubt deserves a enduring place as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, and a rightful place in American era history.

There are many fine history books that tell the whole story of Panama, and the building of the Canal. If the story was made into a movie, it would be an exciting, and uplifting story of human ingenuity, bravery, and triumph.

The End

French Children’s Books- 3 Things every parent must know before teaching French to their kids

French children’s books are helping define why young language learners can learn another language with native-like fluency quite easily. It has been documented that when children learn a foreign language at a young age, it is just as easy to learn that as it is for the child to learn how to walk. Even proponents of the system that allows children to learn one after they have acquired their native tongue have found research that states “Children learn second languages best when simultaneous language building occurs.” Therefore, it is not necessary for kids to wait until middle or high school to begin building the blocks of second language acquisition. As a child, the new learner will be able to recognize sounds, shapes, and language patterns within the foreign language and the native tongue at the same time. With this knowledge, we must stress the three traits that are essential to know when you are considering French children’s books and why your child should learn French.

First, children are like sponges when it comes to learning a new language. They can put together word combinations and patterns of new language acquisition better than the adult learner who is trying to match the grammatical rules of a standard language such as English.

Secondly, French is one of few foreign languages that is used throughout the world in many environments and it is considered an official language in 28 countries. Therefore, it is worthy of note go mention that this language ranks almost as equally high in dominance as English. It will certainly be of use to children who are global travelers or children who are preparing to travel abroad for school or recreational purposes. French was the 11th most common first language in the world, with 77 million first language speakers and another 51 million second language speakers, according to the Ethnologue Report.

Third, people who are reading French children’s bookshave recognized a key aspect of the educational industry. Students of foreign languages have access to a greater number of career possibilities and develop a deeper understanding of their own and other cultures. Research also suggests that children who receive second language instruction are more creative and better at solving complex problems. These problem solvers bring an added perspective to many different environments. Their fluency of a second language can take them bar beyond French borders into conflict resolution and problem solving because of they way their brains are wired. Canadians fluent in other languages enhance our economic competitiveness abroad, improve global communication, and maintain political and security interests, according to one source.

When deciding which foreign language for your children, consider that French is the language that will give you the most choices later on in your studies or your child’s career. Spanish, Chinese, and other foreign language don’t have the worldwide use that French has. Children can get started in that process now with French children’s books that will teach them the basics of the language and how to acquire new word patterns early in the learning process.

Gretchen Jones Language instructor for over 15 years and personal tutor. Extensive research on language acquisition and linguistic patterns has been done. When this certified teacher began doing research on how children learn a new language with French Children’s books, she uncovered some phenomenal information that could be life-changing, if applied early.

What are some traditional spanish story books for children?

I’m doing a lesson for my Global Citezenship class on learning languages in different countries and I needed some books, or tv shows that are used in Spanish Speaking countries. If you list some books or shows that were read or viewed as a child that would help out enormously!

Just go to the public library and ask a librarian. Most libraries in the USA have some books in Spanish for children, and they are chosen carefully. A librarian can help you find them online even if they aren’t in their own building.

Learn Spanish Free Online

The number of English speakers who want To Learn Spanish is growing. For many Americans, it is because they find that Spanish is rapidly becoming accepted as the second language all over the country. The’ Latin invasion’ is no more confined to areas around Miami and LA. For this reason, interest in Learning Spanish is growing in the United States especially for children, as most adults feel that they have passed the age where they can acquire a new language. For most of us, cost or time is the issue. This shouldn’t be the case. Begin any attempt to learn a new language with the idea that it is going to take time (probably years). You are not going to be Speaking Spanish fluently in a month or two (although some language learning programs make that claim). It is better to spend just half an hour a day than spending 3 hours a day for a few days and then taking few days off. Not only will you get burned out very quickly but it is also not the most efficient way of going about it.

Today, just about anything you want to learn is available somewhere on the internet for little or no money. Although most sites are trying to sell you a product, many offer some basic Spanish Lessons for free to get you interested with the hope that you will check out their product. It’s important to read reviews of any Spanish Language Learning software or Book/CD packages a company is selling. The site itself will always claim that they have the perfect product for you and that they can get you speaking Spanish in no time. It is always better to check reviews on sites like Amazon.com to see what people who have bought the product think of it.

The best way is to begin with sources that don’t cost a lot of money. Check out a few books (try to get something with CDs or tapes) from your local library, just to get a feel for what to expect. You may get lucky and find a couple of really good language learning packs there. After you have a good feel for what exactly you would like to learn, go online and do a search on language courses. You will literally get thousands of results (if not hundreds of thousands). Most adults want a learning methodology that is more practical, i.e. they want to learn practical spoken Spanish. So rather than just searching for keywords like ‘spanish’, ‘online’, ‘free lessons’, you should use keywords like ‘practical Spanish’ or ‘learn practical Spanish Online‘ in order to avoid sites that just focus on grammar or the technical parts of the language. Some sites like the grammar section at Wikipedia, give you a good technical explanation of grammar but not a lot of examples on practical usage. You want to find sites that will acquaint you with the way the language is actually spoken, not just the grammar rules.

To get started, try About.com for some free Spanish lessons. They have plenty of material for beginners as well as some great articles about how to get started. Plenty of Spanish books are available to be downloaded for free from sites like Ebookee.com. There are some restrictions but you could get quite a few good books along with the audio portion for free. Sites like http://learnpracticalspanishonline.com/ offer a full course for beginners and plenty of intermediate material for free. The site doesn’t have a lot of graphics and animation but the content is geared more toward a practical approach that will help you with Conversational Spanish.

About the Author

CR Desouza, the author, has devoted much of her time finding better ways to learn languages and has created the following website to help Spanish students of all levels:

It’s your call. There are online dictionaries that can help as well. I wouldn’t suggest using an online translator, because context can get really funky.

backpack for high school.

ok so i used to use a backpack for school in junior high, but i realized that they are ruining my posture (my neck is always way far forward) plus i like the feel of messenger totes better.
however, i’m gonna be a freshman this year and some of my classes have homework every night (spanish, algebra 2, etc).

is there a kind of messenger tote that could fit a lot of books in it, and possibly a side pocket for a water bottle or a small lunch.
and i’m kind of in a budget for anything under $50.

or is there any backpacks that don’t pull your shoulders back so much
and is small enough to fit into a thin locker, but still carry my books.

Why It Is Important To Speak English In Foreign Countries

If you are planning to visit any foreign country, one important thing you should have, along with a passport, air tickets, and an international credit/debit card, is a functional knowledge of English. No other language is as widespread as English. In terms of the number of speakers, the Chinese Mandarin is the most popular language in the world. However, it is rarely spoken or written outside the People’s Republic of China. On the other hand, the number of English speakers has steadily been increasing all over the world. In the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and a host of Commonwealth countries, English is the first-choice language.

English is also widely used and well understood in many other countries including India, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and many former British colonies. Even in the countries where it does not have great penetration such as the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, you can get things done if you have a working knowledge of English. It was reported recently that even the Chinese government had incorporated English education in the curriculum to pluck the benefits of outsourcing. All these indicate the necessity to learn the language.

Reasons For The Global Dominance Of English

English is the official language of correspondence in most countries by default when it comes to communication among other countries. French, Arabic, and Spanish are also used for this purpose, but none comes close to English. In addition, English is usually the official language for international business conferences, meetings and symposiums of the scientific and academic communities, film and art festivals, trade shows, and international summits. Moreover, English is by far the most popular language over the internet and other forms of electronic communication.

There are two reasons for its omnipresence on our planet and three, if you could add the widespread popularity of the internet as well. The first is the colonization agenda of the British empire in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. During the course of the three centuries, the British Empire had expanded to large swathes of land all over the world. It was often remarked that the sun never set in the British Empire. In the process, the British rulers and missionaries established educational institutions in their colonies and laid a foundation for English teaching.

When the power and reach of the British Empire diminished, in came the USA as a global superpower. The dominance of the USA, not just the political dominance, but the cultural dominance as well, catalyzed the spread of the English language. Pop music, Hollywood movies, and pulp fiction became available in almost every country. In all these cultural aspects, English was, and still is, the default medium of communication.

The recent phenomena such as the spread of the internet and the growth of the outsourcing industry also provided momentum to the rise in popularity of English.

Therefore, if you plan to visit another country, you must have a basic knowledge of English. Even if you do not, it is always beneficial to learn to speak, read, and write English.

Which are the most useful languages for an electronic engineer to learn?

My mother tongue is spanish, but I also speak English. I think I should also learn chinese, which languages are best for electronic engineers?

Hello
I imagine that your question relates to improving employment opportunities and will answer therefore from that perspective.

For general information on a career in Electronic Engineering, have a look at the Prospects graduate website at http://www.prospects.ac.uk/links/signposts – select Electrical/electronic engineering from the drop-down list. This brings you to various links that are worth checking out; for example, job options, further study and career areas.

‘What next?’ has a section on ‘working abroad’ – it includes fairly general guidance though, rather than specific information on language requirements.

The link to ‘contacts and resources’ is also worth following up for contact details of various professional bodies. For example, it would be worth contacting The Engineering Council UK (the regulatory body for the engineering profession) at http://www.engc.org.uk/ for information about specific language skills that will enhance your CV and job prospects.

Incidentally, the Prospects site also has information, on applications, CVs and interviews that may be useful when searching for employment: http://www.prospects.ac.uk/cms/ShowPage/Home_page/Applications__CVs_and_interviews/p!eefmd .

You may have already done so but if not, contact the careers service at the university offering this course as information regarding skills, included useful languages for this professional area, should be available there.

Allow some time for your research as you may want to check out other links. I hope this helps answer your query.
