Preparing to Study Spanish Abroad: Movies & Radio

If you are planning to attend Spanish school in Argentina, Peru or Chile, it is a good idea to do some advance preparation before your trip. After all, you want to get as much out of the experience as possible. One great way to get ready to study Spanish abroad is to get your ear attuned to the Spanish language well in advance.

One innovative idea that you may not have thought of is to listen to Spanish talk radio. Believe it or not, it actually doesn’t matter so much whether or not you comprehend what you are hearing. You will benefit just from listening the conversations.

The good news is that if you can’t understand Spanish, it won’t be distracting. Therefore, it will be easy to have the radio on in the background as you do other things. You can listen while you clean the house, pay bills, do homework and drive to work. This process will help you get used to hearing different accents and dialects.

Watching movies can also prep you to Learn Spanish abroad. Why not take advantage of the multi-language feature offered on DVDs? First, watch the film in English (or your native language) so that you can understand the plot and story. Machuca

Machuca is a film that was made in 2004 in Chile. The film, directed by Andre Wood, is set in 1973 and revolves around two boys whose friendship is interrupted when Pinochet comes to power.

Cama Adentro

Another great film is Cama Adentro, directed by Jorge Gaggero. This movie, whose title is translated as “Live in Maid” was made in Argentina in 2005. This film tells that story of a middle-aged socialite who suffers after the financial crisis that took place the first few years of the 21st century.

Much of the story is based on the relationship between this socialite and her maid. This film had an excellent reception at a variety of film festivals including Sundance, where it won a Grand Jury Prize.

While you may not have heard of either of these two films they are great movies that will not only entertain you, but will also fill you in on a bit of South American history.

Watching foreign movies and listening to the radio will not just get you in the mood to attend Spanish school in Argentina, Chile or Peru, it will also assist you to better understand the tone and flow of the language. You will find that the more familiarity you have with the language in advance, the easier you will be able to pick up Spanish in your classes.

the remake quarantine doesn’t interest me

At the moment, according to the IMDB it does not look like it at this time. I have a link to the list of the release dates down below. I’ve never heard of this before.
Maybe it will eventually. Considering they are making a remake of it, after the remake is released they might release the original over here. That is what happened with The Ring movies. The Ring (the American remake of the Japanese Horror film Ringu) was released here and then they released the original movie here as well on DVD.
If you cannot wait that long, there is always the alternative of buying an all region DVD player and buying a DVD from Spain (if you know Spanish) or from somewhere in the UK.

For a school project I have to write a sequel to the most dangerous game, a short story. It has to be at least 2 pages. I have come up with an idea, and would like to know what you think of it. Zaroff won the fight at the end but didn’t feed Rainsford to the dogs because he wanted another shot at him, so he tries to hunt him again with the other Spanish prisoners (its mentioned that Zaroff had them in the story). When Zaroff releases the prisoners out unto the island they all spread out into groups. Zaroff hunts everyone of them down until there are only Rainsford and one Spaniard left. Rainsford sneaks up behind Zaroff and pulls out a spare pistol that he carried around in his holster and Zaroff notices so he points his gun at Rainsford and they shoot each other, both dead. The Spaniard finds the boat and escapes.

I actually really like it. If you don’t mind I’ll give you one suggestion… Before they both shoot each other, they should have a rather lengthy discussion about humanity, decency, etc. (Make Zarboff look as crazy as possible), and then that way your readers won’t expect them to shoot eachother, and Zarboff won’t see it coming either.

It’s more of a shocker, and we all know how much Zarboff likes to hear himself talk.

Immersion, by the student, into a country’s language and culture is by far the best way to learn any language and Spanish is no exception. Some would say that primarily, to gain a good grip of Learning Spanish, a good understanding of grammar is required, however learning and being able to converse and communicate first makes learning Spanish so much more enjoyable and many believe that this is now the best way to Learn Spanish or any other language for that matter.

Needless to say I was intrigued and decided to check it out for myself and my friend was one hundred percent right.

For me, enjoyment comes top of the list, if I’m not enjoying what I’m doing why would I want to continue doing it and then comes quality for a good price; you must find a course that offers excellent course material for an excellent price, anything under $100 is a great deal especially when the top of the range courses can reach the dizzy heights of $500 plus, but remember you will also need to check out the quality of course material provided; there is no point making a saving by spending $100 if the course material is garbage.

How long would it take someone to learn Spanish?

I’m not living in a Spanish Speaking country, no one around me speaks it, All I have is my music (Wisin y Yandel), my movies (Spanish Subtitles & Speaking), A Spanish/English dictionary, a couple of Spanish speaking audio tapes, a spanish book & the desire to learn a new language.

i ususally rip my tv shows with dvd decrypter then convert them using videora ipod converter i recently ripped another tv show and once on my ipod i realised that they are in the wrong language..spanish or something i havent changed any of the settings since doing it last time and when i watched the video after just decrypting it it was fine but after i convereted it it went to spanish. how can i fix this?

What are some good spanish films that i can watch that will help me get better at spanish?

There are some really good ones from Latin America, but I know Spain much better:

Go into imdb…search Pedro Amodovar. Watch ANYTHING by him (one caveat…you need to have a good head for the surreal, and you need to understand the Spanish Civil War). Cross reference any of the actors from his films…cause many of them were in a number of his movies, but they have worked for other directors as well….then crossreference either the other directors, or costars, and then click on them….

Just keep going.

Or you can start with the name “Bardem” (yes, Javier Bardem…he comes from a famous, movie family from Spain…) Or Carlos Saura. Or Benicio del Toro. Or Antonio Banderas (just go with anything with a Spanish title….click) His name will hook you up with a couple of Mexican directors…Desperado was his first “American” film. It was one of a series. Or Peneolope Cruz.

Well, both of them will come up when you search Almodovar…..

You can download some. Netflix or Blockbuster will access many of them.

Most of us don’t have the luxury of time to travel for a few months to a year in order to totally emerse ourselves in the foreign language To Learn Spanish. So, If you enjoyed talking in Spanish during your last trip to Cancun or other festive destination in which Spanish was spoken and you told yourself that you want to speak like a native. Here are some options for you:

It’s been over 10 years since I first have been trying to convince myself that I can learn Spanish but every year around New Years Day that resolution keeps popping back up with little to no progress being made to actually achieve the goal.

This year I made an advancement..I decided to invest a few dollars in some Spanish Learning Software . that will teach me Spanish (item #3) from our fine list above. Spanish learning software is becoming more prevalent among the internet and computer savvy and helps makes learning more fun by providing videos feeds and recordings of native speakers and allowing you to record your responses and conversations.

Both hearing Native speakers and then repeating to the best of your ability…slowly builds up your vocabulary and increases your effectiveness to communicate directly in the Spanish Language. Ok, so..don’t expect the software to learn for you. But, it can provide you with an enjoyable means to learn a language. I have always felt that if you can entertain yourself and learn at the same time, you stand a better chance of succeeding and actually accomplishing it. Meet that lofty goal you set out for yourself.

Another tip, not mentioned in the top 10, probably 11.but worthy of metioning is to watch moves with Spanish subtitles. You can do this simply by setting the subtitles to Spanish and is available on most DVD’s. This way you can watch the movies you like and see the Spanish Translation along with spoken English. Another interesting way to advance you skills.

Although, Item #1 might be the best one., I’m anxious to hit the local Mexican restaurante (item#10) and have myself a delicious Carne Asada Steak and perhaps a cold margarita to celebrate the steps I’m taking to learn Spanish.

Wacthing a Spanish film to help learn the language.?

Hello, I am currently learning Spanish and think it would be a good idea to watch a Spanish film to help me.
I have many DVD’s which I can watch in Spanish but just wondered if was best to watch a film I have already seen in English and I know the story or a different one.
Also should I watch in English Subtitles or not?

I would say that if you can try it with the Spanish Subtitles, it helps your mind stay in the “flow” of Spanish so that you pick up the greatest amount of vocuabulary/phrases from the film.

I’d also say that it’d be a good idea to buy some “Spanish” films so you can get an idea on Spanish Culture – Pedro Almodóvar’s films are a great place to start (Women on the Verge of a nervous breakdown and All about my mother being excellent ones!)
