It is difficult to keep up with all the new technology that appears almost daily on the Internet, but some becomes popular almost instantly. Podcasting is one of them. Every kid now knows how to download podcasts to their computers or their iPods, mostly their favorite songs. But, there is a much more exciting use for podcasting, and that is using it to learn foreign languages like Spanish. Spanish podcasts are now crucial part of most high quality Spanish tutors.

What makes learning foreign languages so intimidating is the pronunciation. Spanish Language Books are full of rules on how to pronounce words, and we can learn the rules, but when we try to say the words, we get in trouble. But, just imagine if you could get all your Spanish Lessons by listening to them, instead of reading them? That is what Spanish podcasts are for.

It really seems so easy. Just put on the CD or tapes, relax in bed and learn English (or another foreign language) while you sleep. Have you ever seen those ads that say, “Learn English While Sleeping” or that promise “effortless” language learning by listening to a tape or CD while you relax or take a nap? With the continual rise in the study of English as a foreign or second language, (EFL, ESL) progressive TEFL English and foreign language teachers, foreign language learners, and educational administrators need to be aware of the implications posed by claims of “learning English (or another foreign language) while you sleep. To better understand the processes involved let’s first look at each of them individually in turn. In this first part of the series, we’ll examine the elements of sleep.

What is Sleep?

The state of sleep is generally defined as “the resting state in which the body is not active and the mind is unconscious.” A more extensive definition is offered by Webster’s New World Dictionary (third ed., 1989); “sleep: a natural, regularly occurring condition of rest for the body and mind, during which the eyes are usually closed and there is little or no conscious thought or voluntary movement, but there is intermittent dreaming”.

Sleep is also likened to death. In the Holy Bible (NWT, 1981) at John 11: 11 Jesus says, “Lazarus or friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.” Then in verse 14 Jesus clarifies his meaning of “sleep”, “At that time, therefore, Jesus said to them outspokenly: Lazarus has died.” In describing death the bible continues at Ecclesiastes 9: 5 stating, “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.” Sleep then, is characterized as a condition typically devoid of conscious thought. Have you ever slept through a severe thunder storm, a series of car alarms going off, an explosion, an earth tremor (minor earthquake) or dogs barking loudly at night? Completely unconscious, right? For even further clarification, here are some characteristics of human sleep.

Characteristics of Sleep

Characteristics of sleep in humans are:

o lying down, if possible although sleep is possible in almost any position according to studies done on astronauts and in sleep study centers

o Eyes are closed, but sleep can occur with opened eyes in an environment devoid of light and / or distraction

o You don’t hear anything or do not consciously respond to external sounds depending on the level, depth or stage of sleep

o Slow, rhythmic breathing pattern (which might be altered during dream stage)

o Muscles are completely relaxed with the exception of altered states of sleep or reaction to dreams or abnormal physical conditions

o Person may occasionally roll over changing positions

Stages of Sleep

On the average, a person goes through five stages, or levels of sleep. The stages each have distinctive characteristics and determine what the brain and body are capable of.

o Stage One – 4-5% Light sleep. Muscle activity slows down

o Stage Two – 45-55% Breathing and heart rate slows. Body temperature decreases

o Stage Three – 4-6% Deep sleep. Slow Delta waves begin

o Stage Four – 12-15% Very deep sleep; brain produces Delta waves

o Stage Five – 20-25% Rapid eye movement (REM); dreaming occurs

Why Do We Sleep?

For the most part, sleep allows several vital functions to take place. It is an essential physical and mental state with which we cannot do without. Our sleep allows us:

o To repair muscles and other tissues

o To replace aging or dead cells

o An opportunity for the brain to organize and archive memories, that is in part, to transfer data and memories from short to long-term memory

o Lowers energy consumption (balance of enzyme production achieved, i.e. blood glucose levels, electrolyte levels, etc.)

o To recharge the brain (diminished supplies of fluids and enzymes in organs and lymphatic system can be replenished during sleep)

How Much Sleep?

Most young adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night, but the quantity of sleep required can vary depending on age, daily activity, diet, nutrition and other physical and / or psychological factors. Sleep deprivation can directly affect:

o Short term memory

o Performance

o Efficiency

o Physical health

o Emotional health

With 30 to 40 million Americans suffering from serious sleep-related disorders, the effect of sleep on learning and cognitive competencies is of serious concern.

Are Readers Important To Authors Or What

Bestselling authors speak of their fans in almost reverential tones, as well they should. A loyal readership that comes back for more, book after book, is the real key to long-term publishing success. Savvy authors work diligently to produce great work that will continue to please their audience, but many of them also communicate directly to their fans. Author’s web sites are all the rage, some of them quite elaborately produced.

We asked Fauzia: What is the most unusual publicity program you’ve developed? “We’re proud of our ability to harness all the power of the Web in the service of authors and their books, and we’re especially committed to making the online presence fit the project.

Here are some examples: “Our site for Doug Stanton’s In Harm’s Way goes beyond words and pictures to include audio interviews with survivors of the 1945 sinking of the USS Indianapolis, video clips of the actual rescue at sea, and a discussion board. Our campaign introduced the book to many audiences, from World War II vets and history buffs, to college and high school students.

Quite a few author websites are just storefronts whose major purpose is to sell books. Others have a much more intimate feel, inviting visitors to: “Come on in and meet me. Stay and chat.” With all the other pressures on their time, why do bestselling authors go to the trouble of answering fan e-mail, or posting responses to message boards on their web sites, and continually upgrading them with information about their new project or where they will be appearing?

Nicholas Sparks, www.nicholassparks.com, whose first book, The Notebook set a new standard for romance, answers the question: You interact with your fans more that many authors do. Your web site is particularly interactive, with message boards and an e-mail address for fans to reach you. Why did you take this approach? “People have so many questions about my novels or want to know about me, and there’s a lot of misinformation out there. I wanted to have the correct answers put up where readers could easily access them. The web site is a way to make sure the truth is getting out there. For instance, the question, Where did I get the idea for The Notebook? If I say it was inspired by my wife’s grandparents, this is very much the truth, but not much information. Readers want to know more: How was it inspired? In what way? How did that whole thought process work? So I explained the whole situation so the readers understand.”

Does that interaction encourage the word of mouth buzz about your books? “Maybe a little. But not everyone cares about what an author’s life is like. They just want to read a good book.”

We asked Anna: Romance authors seem to have a more personal relationship with their fans, interacting with them on web sites, message boards, Internet chats, book readings. Why is that? What does an author learn from this interaction that assists her with her work? “I’m not sure it’s just romance authors. I think it’s a woman’s approach. I happen to believe that if you put something back into the universe it will bring good karma. Or as my daughter puts it: What goes around, comes around. But I also keep in touch with readers because if you can ‘attach’ readers as well as writing good books (the latter is the prime pre-requisite) they go out and talk about your books to others.

“I learn a lot from readers’ emails about what has particularly pleased them. That doesn’t hurt. Also writing is a very solitary activity, so it’s nice to be in touch with others. And we all need feedback and praise. I’m as human as any other. I love to hear that someone has enjoyed my books. It’s much more fun than sales figures.”

Economically, they buy the books, making it possible for me to write more and for my publisher to continue having confidence in me. I sit at home all day on my own with a keyboard for company. Fans connect me, help me to keep on target. And a fan is a reader. They complete the link, the communication between writer and reader.

One of my favourite movie stars is Vivien Leigh who appeared in a 1937 film “Fire Over England” with Laurence Olivier. This was based on the novel by A.E.W. Mason with same title. I checked IMDb database and this is the writeup:

But did you know that it’s not just a goofy childrens’ song and that it topped the pop charts in 1958? Did you know that the high-pitched voice of the Witch Doctor in the song is actually the same voice of the world-renown Alvin and the Chipmunks?

The artist who had a #1 hit in 1958 with “The Witch Doctor” was David Seville; the same David Seville that about a year later was all over the radio airwaves (and soon TV too) yelling “ALVIN!” (and winning a Grammy in 1959).

David Seville was the stage name of Ross Bagdasarian Sr., born in Fresno, CA in 1919 (and died in 1972).

“The Witch Doctor” was not Seville’s first #1, although it was the song that propelled his career to international fame and fortune. In 1951 a song he co-wrote with his cousin and successful playwrite William Saroyan, “Come On-A My House” was a #1 hit for singer Rosemary Clooney (aunt of the famous actor George Clooney).

“In 1958, my family was down to our last $200. Being a gambler at heart, my dad did what any other prudent person would do. He took $190 of it and bought the latest state of the art tape recorder, one that allowed him to change tape speeds. As he tried to decide what to write about, he spotted a book on his desk, Duel with the Witch Doctor. In a burst of creative energy, fueled mostly by pure panic, he wote ‘Witch Doctor’ — a song about a guy who’s hopelesssly in love and goes to see a witch doctor for advice…” –Ross Bagdasarian, Jr.

But how was the Witch Doctor’s voice, and the Chipmunks’ voices actually created?

Since if you increase the speed of the tape, the TEMPO of the performance also speeds up, in order to get the desired result of correct tempo combined with the high-pitched voice, Seville had to record the songs singing them at about half speed — a laborious task especially for the Chimpmunks’ records which had multiple characters and harmony parts.

“Bagdasarian did all the voices himself, a tedious process that took three days and nine tape tracks in a recording studio. He named the Chipmunks after Al Bennett and Si Warnoker, the heads of his record company, Liberty, and Ted Keep, the recording engineer for the session.” –StraightDope.com

As for “The Witch Doctor,” upon its release by the financially strapped Liberty Records, it shot to #1 and sold more than a million copies. Alvin and the Chipmunks’ “The Chipmunk Song,” which debuted in November of 1958, did even better.

“When the dust settled in mid-January 1959, “The Chipmunk Song” had sold four and a half million records in seven weeks. An all time record in the music business…In 1964, the Beatles ["I Want to Hold Your Hand"] eclipsed “The Chipmunk Song” for fastest selling song of all time. French Children’s Books- 3 Things every parent must know before teaching French to their kids

French children’s books are helping define why young language learners can learn another language with native-like fluency quite easily. Children today are easily distracted when it comes to learning and teaching children is tough. Teachers and childcare providers need all the help they can get when it comes to educating children. A classroom rug is a teaching aid that is invaluable in the classroom. These bright and fun classroom carpets come in many shapes, sizes, and themes. All geared to help the classroom teacher or daycare provider educate and inspire children.

Who uses Classroom Rugs?

Alphabet Rugs – Available with uppercase, lowercase, combination, and with images and letters. An alphabet rug will aid in letter recognition and phonics. Children’s rugs with letters and images aid in letter association with a word — for example, the letter “D” and a picture of a dinosaur. Teachers can use an alphabet carpet to teach preschool and elementary school students the alphabet and spelling. Learning this way is fun, exciting, & interactive!

Number Rugs – With a number rug children will learn to recognize numbers and learn to count. Some children’s rugs come with both the alphabet and numbers.

The number of English speakers who want To Learn Spanish is growing. For many Americans, it is because they find that Spanish is rapidly becoming accepted as the second language all over the country. The’ Latin invasion’ is no more confined to areas around Miami and LA. For this reason, interest in Learning Spanish is growing in the United States especially for children, as most adults feel that they have passed the age where they can acquire a new language. For most of us, cost or time is the issue. This shouldn’t be the case. Begin any attempt to learn a new language with the idea that it is going to take time (probably years). You are not going to be Speaking Spanish fluently in a month or two (although some language learning programs make that claim). It is better to spend just half an hour a day than spending 3 hours a day for a few days and then taking few days off. Not only will you get burned out very quickly but it is also not the most efficient way of going about it.

Today, just about anything you want to learn is available somewhere on the internet for little or no money.  Although most sites are trying to sell you a product, many offer some basic Spanish Lessons for free to get you interested with the hope that you will check out their product. It’s important to read reviews of any Spanish Language Learning software or Book/CD packages a company is selling. The site itself will always claim that they have the perfect product for you and that they can get you speaking Spanish in no time. It is always better to check reviews on sites like Amazon.com to see what people who have bought the product think of it.

The best way is to begin with sources that don’t cost a lot of money. Check out a few books (try to get something with CDs or tapes) from your local library, just to get a feel for what to expect. You may get lucky and find a couple of really good language learning packs there. After you have a good feel for what exactly you would like to learn, go online and do a search on language courses.
