Should I learn Spanish or any other language?

Hi, I have always wanted to learn a foreign language. I Like Spanish, French and Italian. I started learning French but gave up after a month after seeing that I wasn’t really heading anywhere. I am interested in conversational learning.

I have read that Spanish is a relatively easier language to grasp ( considering that I speak English ). I am also open to French & Italian but I can’t wait forever to be actually able to speak.

a) Would you recommend Spanish for faster learning?If no then which other language should I take up that I’ll be able to speak easily.

b) Since I want to learn only to have fun and understand different cultures, do you think I’ll enjoy Speaking Spanish. If not why & which language would you recommend?

To your title quesetion: Yes.

Spanish easier than French? No. They are pretty much the same. French is a bit tougher at first, but when you get into the more advanced levels of Spanish, you run into some more complicated stuff.

It sounds like two things happened:

A) you wound up in a class that wasn’t taught to your learning style and/or your interests.

B) you gave up WAY too soon!

You want something modern/communicative…a class that is totally grammar driven is probably not going to appeal to you. Try going to livemocha.com. As you go along, you’ll probably find you DO need some more grammar, so go to About.com for that piece…search language name…”Spanish Language“, and there’s some grammar and worksheets to practice.

There are other courses out there, but this is a good one to start with, especially if you want conversation-driven course.

I have a B.A. in Spanish, and am working on my M.A. in Latin American literature at the moment. I also speak French as I lived in Paris for nearly three years, and I just got myself a book/CD called “Teach Yourself Portuguese,” and am really enjoying it. So far, it’s been fairly easy to pick up, but I am curious, have any of you done Portuguese after learning Spanish and how hard or easy was it? Do you ever mix the two?

I am taking spanish tutoring once a week with a group of 4 people including myself. we want to learn conversational spanish and learn things quickly. we aren’t so much interested in grammar and such for now. we would just like to improve vocab and verb conjugations. rather than spend the whole class talking and going through conjunctions, preps. and so forth. any ideas?

Ok, two advices. First, READ. It will help you improve your sintaxis and verb conjugation without effort. It is amazing.

Second,for pronunciation, listen to Spanish news and programs, (news preferably from CNN where they barely have an accent. And talk a lot. With yourself, if you just. Makes you improve lots.

What is the difference in Spanish Speaking from Mexico verses Spain? Which dialect should you learn?

I live in Texas and I am trying to Learn Spanish. I basically want to teach myself at first, just to learn to communicate a little and some basic words before I start taking college courses for it next semester. I found some audio podcast, but one that I really like states that they are using dialect from Spain and that if you speak with this dialect anyone who knows Spanish will be able to understand. I do know that I have a friend from Mexico that went to Spain a couple years ago and people had a hard time understanding him, but they understood his wife who is also from Mexico. She was raised in a more formal type household and she said that they learned proper Spanish??? Obviously, they are bilingual and I understand everything they say in English and they do not speak English with a lot of slang.

Any advice on which is best to learn and why? Any study tips… especially on how to roll my R’s !

What should I do about my OCD interfering with my studies?

Well, all my life, I’ve had poor comprehension problems. My OCD is making it worse because with the unwanted, intrusive thoughts, I can’t concentrate or focus, & I misread or misunderstand the course material in school. I have a 2.3 GPA with a BA in Spanish. I’m going back to school to try to improve my GPA to try to get into Grad School, but my unwanted thoughts are getting harder & harder to fight. It’s very embarrassing & frustrating. I fight with this daily. People think I’m slow & a dummy, & they think I’m wasting my time, trying to get into Grad School. It’s my OCD & Anxiety that get in the way with my learning, & my depression affects my attendance. I panic when I have to read something or write a paper. My Tourette’s Syndrome gets me in trouble because people think I’m misbehaving, but I can’t help it. I had an anxiety attack & TS outburst & the university wanted to throw me out for DISORDERLY CONDUCT. I can’t control these symptoms, & I take meds & see a psychiatrist.

Well, I too also have OCD and it is such a pain – I understand completely what you are going through. I’ve had so much trouble with school for as far back as I can remeber. The key thing I’ve noticed in what you’ve told us is that your medication does not seem to be working. You need to see your Psychiatrist ASAP. Let them know the medication you are on is not helping. They may either need to raise your dosage or change your medication all together. Also, if they just put you on a new medication or changed your dosage, it may take some time before you see the effects of it. If, however, your Psychiatrist does not think your medication needs to be changed, it may be time to find another Psychiatrist. They really need to understand that this is ruining your life and you want to get better. In the mean time, you may want to find a tutor or a friend to help you study. Also try talking with your Professors when classes start, so they can have a better understanding of the difficulty you are having. Some (but not all) may understand where you are coming from and offer some help. Having this disorder means you will have to work twice as hard, but you can do it!!! Good Luck. My thoughts are with you.

Where in Spain is an authentic Spanish-speaking town/city for family with three 10-yearolds to live for 1 year

I want to move my family to Spain to learn Spanish. Want a town with very few English-speakers. Would like upscale, safe and clean. Want to enroll our 3 girls in regular school. Spouse and I both want jobs, but high pay not important. Many skills, both with college education. Don’t want area with high tourism.

I would suggest Seville, because It’s where I did so. Of course I was a bit older (20 – and in University), but it fits your needs. Santander is another good choice. Madrid might prove to be less easy to avoid English speakers, though in the suburbs, you will probably have no problem, and there is more likelihood of work. Getting work permits may prove difficult for you if you are Americans, make sure you have that under control before you make any further plans, though British people have only to find work, the visa situation is taken care of by EU rules.

Listen to http://www.spanishpod101.com . They have a new lesson every day, very convenient. I don’t like sitting in front of my computer for long periods so i put a bunch of lessons into my mp3 player and I’m set!

What’s the best way to learn conversational Spanish at home?

I have a good grasp of the basics and now I feel that I’m ready to progress to conversational Spanish. I know the best way is to live in a Spanish Speaking country, but for right now I’m interested in studying at home. What are some good options?

I basically learned Spanish by watching the Spanish channel. I’m not sure which channels are in your area, but Telemundo and Univision are two popular Spanish channels. I prefer to watch Telemundo because they have some great novelas (soap operas) which are very intriguing to watch. See if your cable provider enables you to turn on captions, so you’ll be able to see the Spanish Words as they’re speaking. I’m able to turn on captions using my cable remote. This is great for learning.

Although watching TV is a great way to learn, it can be quite difficult to follow along at first because they speak very fast, but I found another great way to learn Spanisn that will get you up to speed. Check it out: http://www.supremespanish.com

This is somewhat similar to watching TV in which it consists of listening to conversations except with this you’re able to listen to them in fast and slow speed, and they also have the English translation so it’s really easy and a great way to learn. I’ve been using this for a while and it works great!
