How To Learn Spanish Reading? – Rocket Spanish Review

Spanish really is an easy language to learn. This is especially true when you have the right material to help you out. Have you ever thought about learn Spanish reading? Do you believe that English is the Universal language? Would you believe us if we told you that it really isn’t? Chinese is the first most popular language, the second most popular is Spanish and the third is English.

There are many books out there that will teach you the basics of Spanish. Yes, they consist of reading, but reading the word (not listening to it) is the best way to learn. Why is this? Yes, those audio tapes that teach Spanish are great, but in order to really get a feel of how the world is pronounced, you will need to see how it is spelled. Does this make any sense to you?

There are many courses on the Internet that will help you get better. Online courses can be a bit on the expensive side, but there are many out there that are affordable. It is all a matter of taking time to do the research. Below are some tips on reading Spanish:

First, you should start by reading the whole paragraph, chapter or story until you have completed it without using the dictionary to translate the words. At first, this may seem difficult. This is especially true if you are the type that does not like reading, especially when you do not understand what it is that you are reading.

Next, when you finish reading the story at least one time, you should read it over again using the dictionary to translate the words. You should try not to sit there and look up every word at this time. Instead, try looking up those keywords that will help you to understand the meaning of the sentence.

Any ideas for a Spanish topic?

I am in Year 9, top set Spanish and I’ve been entered into a Spanish leadership course where we teach Spanish Lessons. We are struggling for ideas on what to teach and how to teach it. We need an hours worth of material, but we’re only using one 15 minute activity. Any ideas? Thanks!

I can’t say I am particularly fluent in the language, but have taken a few courses through the years. My suggestion is along these lines:

I have found in the past that many texts (and college courses) don’t seem to cover a lot of situations and aspects of life that are important to me…on a day-to-day basis. For your project, I would take a situation…such a standing at a bus-stop, or in line at a concert, or in line at the market, or in meeting a new person in your building who has cute kids (or in the work environment)..and touch on some reasonable, logical dialog between those involved.

E.g….

My, what beautiful children you have, Madam!
Wow, those are large avocados. Good prices on them here today?
Do you know how long til the next bus gets her, Buddy?

Wow, what a long wait in line!! Is it usually this bad?
Miss, excuse me, but you look terrific today!!
Man, what were you thinking?!!
Sir, you are standing on my daughter’s foot. Get out of here!!

I had so much trouble at work today, I am “fit to be tied!”
I have “really had it” with my boss!!
I completed all my assignments, and now he tells me he may have to let me go.
I am really upset by his behavior. He is pushing everyone so hard!
He is a “slave-driver!” And, the salary is low, and no benefits!!

I think I’d like a beer. What about everybody else?
I just walked out of the house, and this is simply magnificent weather today!
How much for the bus-fare, Miss?

That woman has a really nice figure!
Sir, I want to complement you for such fine service!
That meal was “out of this world!”
Let me see. That price seems high. How about $2, instead of $3?
Could we maybe do a trade, instead of using money?
Sir, there is a problem with this product. I need to return (or exchange) it, please.

(To one’s spouse or lover) Wow, Dear, you look good enough to eat! ; )

Sir, you are really giving me a hard time. Be reasonable!!
Madam, I am really offended by what you said!
If I said this to you, I think you would really be offended.
Come on, let’s be reasonable.
OK. let’s negotiate.
That was a very bad attitude you expressed to me.
That guy is a bully. Avoid him, at all cost.
I know a better place down the street.
Maybe you’d consider changing your mind.

Janet, what kind of work do you do?
Is it challenging? Do you find it satisfying work?
is this a career or just a job?

He has a serious medical condition.
Where is the pain?
What was the first time you noticed this problem, Miss?
We need to do CPR immediately.
What kind of medication is he on?
Madam, you need to have your head examined!! ; )

Learn Spanish With Your 4G Connection

There are many advantages to learning a foreign language. In addition to being able to travel more easily in foreign countries and watch foreign films, you are also gaining valuable skills that will make you more marketable as an employee. Spanish is hot right now, and people who know How To Speak Spanish are more easily finding employment in a number of different fields. There are many different ways To Learn Spanish, but for those who are serious about diving in and picking up a second language an investment in wireless internet should be seen as a good first step to take. This purchase will open you up to a world of possibilities and allow you to connect with others who are also trying to learn.

One of the most important things in learning another language is the ability to practice conversations. Many folks only focus on their texts, and find it hard to communicate with others. Talking is a skill, and the more that one is able to practice the better that he or she will get. Furthermore, the Spanish that is often presented in books is a theoretical Spanish and not a practical Spanish. Each Spanish Speaking region speaks a little bit differently. Consequentially, it is important to learn slang and colloquial expressions, something that is only done orally. With a wireless internet connection you are able to find people from around the world to practice with, and therefore, improve your speaking skills.

If you live in an area with few native Spanish speakers, then it could be complicated to find someone who is willing to practice with you. Even if you do find someone who wants to Practice Spanish, it is likely that you will want to practice far more than they would want to coach you. This means that you need to find a number of folks who would want to assist you in your goal of learning Spanish. The Internet was designed for this sort of experiment, and online it is not hard at all to find people for a language exchange-often for something as simple as helping them learn English. A 4G connection is a crucial must have in order to be able to acquire the tools you need for language acquisition.

Owning and taking advantage of a mobile WiMax connection also enables you to take advantage of different kinds of video resources that exist online. You will be able to view everything from foreign films to videos designed for folks who are trying to learn Spanish. Video is a great tool because it integrates both watching and listening at the same time and allows your mind to pick up Spanish easier. Also, it gives you a hint as to how fast people talk in real life so that you are prepared to talk faster.

It really seems so easy. Just put on the CD or tapes, relax in bed and learn English (or another foreign language) while you sleep. Have you ever seen those ads that say, “Learn English While Sleeping” or that promise “effortless” language learning by listening to a tape or CD while you relax or take a nap? With the continual rise in the study of English as a foreign or second language, (EFL, ESL) progressive TEFL English and foreign language teachers, foreign language learners, and educational administrators need to be aware of the implications posed by claims of “learning English (or another foreign language) while you sleep. To better understand the processes involved let’s first look at each of them individually in turn. In this first part of the series, we’ll examine the elements of sleep.

What is Sleep?

The state of sleep is generally defined as “the resting state in which the body is not active and the mind is unconscious.” A more extensive definition is offered by Webster’s New World Dictionary (third ed., 1989); “sleep: a natural, regularly occurring condition of rest for the body and mind, during which the eyes are usually closed and there is little or no conscious thought or voluntary movement, but there is intermittent dreaming”.

Sleep is also likened to death. In the Holy Bible (NWT, 1981) at John 11: 11 Jesus says, “Lazarus or friend has gone to rest, but I am journeying there to awaken him from sleep.” Then in verse 14 Jesus clarifies his meaning of “sleep”, “At that time, therefore, Jesus said to them outspokenly: Lazarus has died.” In describing death the bible continues at Ecclesiastes 9: 5 stating, “The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.” Sleep then, is characterized as a condition typically devoid of conscious thought. Have you ever slept through a severe thunder storm, a series of car alarms going off, an explosion, an earth tremor (minor earthquake) or dogs barking loudly at night? Completely unconscious, right? For even further clarification, here are some characteristics of human sleep.

Characteristics of Sleep

Characteristics of sleep in humans are:

o lying down, if possible although sleep is possible in almost any position according to studies done on astronauts and in sleep study centers

o Eyes are closed, but sleep can occur with opened eyes in an environment devoid of light and / or distraction

o You don’t hear anything or do not consciously respond to external sounds depending on the level, depth or stage of sleep

o Slow, rhythmic breathing pattern (which might be altered during dream stage)

o Muscles are completely relaxed with the exception of altered states of sleep or reaction to dreams or abnormal physical conditions

o Person may occasionally roll over changing positions

Stages of Sleep

On the average, a person goes through five stages, or levels of sleep. The stages each have distinctive characteristics and determine what the brain and body are capable of.

o Stage One – 4-5% Light sleep. Muscle activity slows down

o Stage Two – 45-55% Breathing and heart rate slows. Body temperature decreases

o Stage Three – 4-6% Deep sleep. Slow Delta waves begin

o Stage Four – 12-15% Very deep sleep; brain produces Delta waves

o Stage Five – 20-25% Rapid eye movement (REM); dreaming occurs

Why Do We Sleep?

For the most part, sleep allows several vital functions to take place. It is an essential physical and mental state with which we cannot do without. Our sleep allows us:

o To repair muscles and other tissues

o To replace aging or dead cells

o An opportunity for the brain to organize and archive memories, that is in part, to transfer data and memories from short to long-term memory

o Lowers energy consumption (balance of enzyme production achieved, i.e. blood glucose levels, electrolyte levels, etc.)

o To recharge the brain (diminished supplies of fluids and enzymes in organs and lymphatic system can be replenished during sleep)

How Much Sleep?

Most young adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night, but the quantity of sleep required can vary depending on age, daily activity, diet, nutrition and other physical and / or psychological factors. Sleep deprivation can directly affect:

o Short term memory

o Performance

o Efficiency

o Physical health

o Emotional health

With 30 to 40 million Americans suffering from serious sleep-related disorders, the effect of sleep on learning and cognitive competencies is of serious concern.

In the next segment of this series, “Learn A Foreign Language While You Sleep: Theoretical Approaches”, we’ll look at both recent and current language-learning theories and approaches and how some might seemingly provide some support for these claims.

In learning a new language, many positive things can come about and especially when you learn Spanish. Many things can also be enhanced in your career and home life. It can help in communication when going to other countries as well. There are many good reasons for taking the time to learn one additional language if not more.

It is no surprise that Spanish is becoming very popular. The largest concentration of the Hispanic population here in the United States is found in Texas and California. Falling fourth place on the list of countries that speak Spanish you will find the United States. Spain, Mexico, and Colombia remain the top three. It’s very clear why Learning Spanish would help individuals in more ways than one.

Enhancing your career can come of learning Spanish. You may even potentially receive a raise because of this new skill. You may all of a sudden have various job offers and therefore new opportunities will open up. This makes you more valuable than the employee who does not speak a second language. It’s obvious who is more likely to receive a job offer or a raise. During the tough times, everyone can use a little extra money.

Imagine traveling to a place where you can not understand what anyone is saying. It may be difficult in communicating when shopping, sightseeing or eating in restaurants. It is also obvious to others that you do not speak their language and therefore you may be taken advantage of. If you are familiar with the language, all of this is made easier. Not only will they show their appreciation but your chances of receiving regular prices are higher.

Although not the best reason To Learn Spanish, it will also change the way your friends and family look at you. You can impress them with your new skill and explain to them all the benefits you receive from this knowledge. If your friends decide to go away to a place where only you may help in communication, they will most likely invite you to do so. For your friends or family, you can communicate their needs to the locals.

Many people have friends of all different ethnicities so when you can speak their language, it is easier to communicate. This can actually enhance your friendship. Learning a friend’s language helps not only for you to communicate in Spanish but you may also explain what things mean in English. You can learn your friend’s culture and language which will be greatly appreciated.

Understanding someone’s culture is very important because we all have our differences. We think and act one way while the person sitting next to us thinks and acts another. When we take the time to learn someone’s language, it is packaged with the knowledge of their culture. You are not just learning a language, you are learning and understanding how others think, feel and learn.

If you want a competitive resume, if you learn new languages you will enhance your chances of getting a new job position. You would be surprised how easy traveling becomes when you know the native tongue. Spanish is especially beneficial because it continues to grow rapidly in the United States. For that extra skill to help your career in the future, a student may want to learn Spanish Online as a second language.

Any premier authorities on Spain? Where to depart from… land?

I’m researching flights now.

My question is, I understand that it’s cheaper to depart from some airports than from others?

I have researched Spain for maybe 25 of my 29 years but I STILL don’t know this:

To get the best deal on flights:

Should I depart from Charlotte, North Carolina… or take the train to another town (such as Washington, Atlanta, etc.) and depart from there??
Should I fly to Madrid or another airport (in Málaga, Andalucia and in Sevilla, Andalucia are other destinations).

My destination is Barcelona, and I live in North Carolina.
I’ve researched how to get to Barcelona once in Spain, unfortuantely I don’t qualify for a Eurail youth-pass (I’m old )but I don’t think navigating the railway system is hard.

I have my heart set on going, I’m saving my money, working full time (I’m a teacher)… and going there to study. I’ve mastered Spanish and trying to learn some Catalán.

It means so, so very much to me!!

Rule of thumb…if you want to go to Barcelona, fly to Barcelona. Why waste your time and energy on the rest of this?

By the time you get done paying for the train to Washington (and the time, as well) you have spent just as much anyways, possibly more.

There ARE two airports about an hour from Barça, but then, if you save $100 to fly in there, and spend an hour and $100 getting into town, not to mention the extra time waiting for a bus/taxi/train, what have you really saved?

Just fly from Charlotte to BCN. Save yourself the worry.

As for the trains, they are stupid-simple to navigate. You’ll figure it out on the first leg. Don’t worry about THAT at all. You COULD get a non youth eurail, but my experience with that was that it was ABSOLUTELY not worth it! Three to four trips out of two months? You might as well just buy the tickets individually. And Spain has ALWAYS had those surcharges for anything not a post train, anyways, so you are going to have to pay, no matter what.

HERE is a piece of important advice: GET YOUR RAIL TICKETS IN ADVANCE. The line are RIDICULOUS! You can get them over the phone, then pick them up at the automated kiosks, or I think you can buy them online, as well, and pick them up the same. THOSE lines are short and quick, but to get to an actual agent…not worth it!

Rocket Spanish – Scam or Really Good Deal?

Rocket Spanish makes promises but none the creator of the program fails to keep. This Spanish program is unique because it is thorough and packed with educational tools, which add quality to lessons it offers. Everyone wants assurances to prove they will receive what advertising promises to deliver. There are many websites online, offering those assurances in relation to Rocket Spanish. Out of more than two hundred websites, Rocket Spanish received 5 out of 5 stars consistently without a negative review. Perhaps this explains why one website uses the adjective premiere to describe Rocket Spanish.

Unlike other Spanish programs claiming to teach people How To Speak Spanish, Rocket Spanish offers much more. It is a Spanish Language course based on sound educational principles, using a learning model of progression from one level to the next. This is a well-integrated Comprehensive Spanish course divided into a Mini-course, teaching some Conversational Spanish in a short period and three learning levels over a three-month period.

The program first offers a free six-lesson program with the goal of teaching some conversational Spanish, a thousand- word vocabulary and some essential grammar rules. At the end of this Mini course, participants are capable of speaking a minimal amount of Spanish. If participants have mastered the words, phrases and sentences taught within the Mini-Course they can, carry on Simple Spanish conversations. Participants can download the audio portions of the Mini-course to a MP3 player or disc and practice speaking the Spanish presented wherever they are.

One main feature so many like is the choice of downloading the entire program to your PC or iPod while others like to have the complete program shipped to them. The program in hard copy consists of two large binders packed with printed lessons and CD’s that accompany the printed lessons. However, there is great value to the online course due to the interactive online forum. Many people taking the course listen to the audio on their MP3 player or portable CD player traveling to and from work, when running or jogging, or just sitting outdoors in the sun.
Learning Spanish?

I am in Spanish IV. and I think that I can probably hold a good conversation with a Spanish speaker but I would like to get better. What cd roms or computer games have you guys used that have really helped you learn spanish better. I heard that Rosetta Stone is really good.

I tried Rosetta Stone for Spanish. It does not have any translation, grammar or conjugation instructions so it will be very hard to go beyond the basics with it. There is no way to be fluent with it. Their program is based on the same thing where you see these 4 pictures over and over again. I was disappointed especially for the price I paid.

My college uses a software called tell me more. It covers not only the basics, but also intermediate or advanced level. It is also a lot less repetitive. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me and I bought their individual version. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,…, includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than any other language software. Their speech recognition is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You can check out their website at http://www.tellmemorestore.com for a free demo and compare too. You can check out independent reviews on the web too Top Ten Reviews or about.com websites. I just noticed they launched a new product.

The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much

You Can Learn Spanish In Under Three Months – A Great Tool For Traveling!

Spanish is one of the world’s fastest growing languages and is a phenomenal tool to have up your sleeve. Problem is, can you Learn Spanish Fast? Today we look at how anyone can Learn Spanish Quickly and be speaking the language in under three months.

Here are some helpful hints to facilitate the process of Learning Spanish. While you’ll still need to have a good textbook, classroom instruction or online course, these steps can speed along the process of mastering the Spanish Language.

Subtitles

Watch DVDs of English language movies with the Spanish Subtitles turned on. Read along and you’ll eventually start to learn Spanish Words as you watch movies! This is a simple and fun way to build your Spanish Vocabulary.

Kids’ Books

Reading children’s books is Spanish is another great way to learn the language. These can either be very simple books or ones which you are already familiar with in English – consider picking up a Spanish Translation of a favored book; when you already know the book, figuring out the meaning of the Spanish words will be far easier.

TV

Television and radio programs in Spanish are valuable tools for picking up the language as well. Telenovelas (similar to soap operas) are great ways to hear Spanish spoken clearly.

Comic Strips

Reading Spanish language comic strips (available both online and in newspapers) are a great way to learn the language – you’ll get to see idiomatic Spanish you’d never learn from a textbook and the format makes them easy to follow.

3×5 Cards

You can use these cards to create your own flash cards. Carry some with you and when you find words or phrases you are unfamiliar with, write them down and learn the meanings later. You can then add these to your flash cards and have a great learning tool.

Remember High School?

A lot of us took some Spanish in high school or college or perhaps a related Romance language such as French or Italian. These provide you with a good basis to build on, since you’ll have learned a bit about grammar and verb conjugation. If you know some Italian or French you will already have something of a handle on word order within sentences, but keep in mind that pronunciation will be significantly different.

Talk With Native Speakers

If you live in an area with a large Spanish Speaking population (for instance, Texas, California, Florida or larger cities like Chicago and New York), you’ll have an easy time meeting native speakers to practice your skills with. However, even if you don’t have a lot of native speakers to converse with in your area, get in contact with a Spanish club or students from a Spanish class.

Practice Every Day

Daily practice will quickly help to build your Spanish language skills. The more you work on your skills, the quicker and easier you will master Spanish. Mix up your study routine to keep things interesting.

By using these tips, you’ll make learning to speak Spanish much quicker and more fun. You should also choose a self-study or classroom Spanish Course which has a proven track record and uses a variety of teaching techniques. Many people give up on learning a new language due to burning out on a dull routine. However, there are fun and interactive methods now available which can have you Speaking Spanish quickly.

is it such a horrible thing that students be required to learn another language?

i was reading an immigration question and one guy was pissed that they were forcing kids To Learn Spanish in school. oh shit what a waste of class time. learning something in sschool that is actually useful. in most countries children learn english in their schools taught in their native language. actually in china teens are paying for outside tutoring in english. we should require students to learn a second language earlier then 7th grade. it should begin as early as possible. it will ne easier for them to learn as language is still developing for them.

I agree. It is very uncommon for any school to not require a second language, except in the US. In some countries, students have to learn 2 foreign languages.

But I’m not so sure about offering only Spanish. Unless the school is very small, they should make an effort to offer at least 2 foreign languages to choose from.

Flash Animation Making Elearning Easier

I attended an animation seminar recently and it was quite a fun and informative event. Various animators and animation enthusiasts have attended the prestigious event. Luckily I was part of the guest list, the animation seminar started from where animation originated, from the ancient times to the first time Gertie, the dinosaur, was able to move on its own. Later modern animation was discussed.

Flash animation is one of the elearning tools used in creating learning content. It is now being used as a platform in producing animated series. From what I have observed, more and more people are acknowledging this new medium for animation. Knowing this, I asked myself, “Would an animated learning content be a better education course?”

Dora the explorer became a cartoon sensation with the younger generation. From toddlers to kids aged 7, every kid knows the Spanish Speaking girl. The cartoon is basically about the adventures of Dora and her boot wearing monkey friend. They solve different problems in every episode. The treatment of the cartoon is similar to an interactive flash game. Dora will ask a question then a cursor similar to a personal computer’s mouse cursor will guide the viewers in choosing the right answer.

The show is very educational and since it involves the audience in the problem solving parts, it makes the show interactive and engaging. My 5 year old kid really likes to fiddle with my computer so I bought preschool game software. The game has animated clips and an animated character that guides him throughout the game. He loves it so much because he really loves cartoons and when I am doing paper work, I let him play with it. The result was quite impressive. There was a time when I have to show him how to solve a certain puzzle and when he encountered a similar puzzle like the one I’d solved, he solved it on his own effortlessly.

Nowadays people are seeing animation as more than just shows for children. Filmmakers now use animation as a medium in their movies. In the virtual classroom, animation is a great tool for teaching elearners through the use of flash animation. Real life situations can be animated for students to study. For example, in medical and health education courses, the human anatomy is animated and even though it is a simulated version of the real thing, the details of it are very accurate. It is like seeing the real thing as well. Online medical students can watch how medicine works on certain ailments through an animated clip which shows how the medicine is applied. Ordinary and boring quizzes can be spiced up by converting it into a more animated and interactive game rather than presenting it in a simple question and answer form.

By using animation in producing learning content, students become more interested in learning because they are learning their lessons but at the same time they are entertained as well. Elearning tools like flash animation makes online learning content and education modules become easier to understand and user friendly.

How to teach preschool children who only speak spanish?

I want to home school my 4 year old to prepare him for kindergarten. He only speaks spanish and I’m not sure how to introduce him to english. I want him to learn to speak and understand english to prepare him for school. I know what I need to teach him and i have excellent lesson plans but they’re all in English. So how should I do it. I don’t want to confuse him I want him to know and understand what we’re doing. If there is someone with experience in working with children who don’t speak english please help me out.

By the way, I do speak English and Spanish, so language is not a problem for me.
He’s only 4 years old and has never been to school so all the stuff he’s going to see is new to him besides the new language

I would start speaking English to him so it won’t be such a shock when he does start school. You could also start taking him to story time at the library or book store. He will be exposed to English and have you there to help him understand what is going on. I taught Migrant Head Start and I was amazed at how quickly the children became bilingual. It was literally 3-4 months and ALL the children were fluent in both languages. Young children pick up language so quickly. I wish it were so easy for an adult to learn another language!!

Can Learning Languages Help You Better Understand Science and Technology?

by Philip Yaffe

“I was 24 years old when I first began thinking and speaking in a foreign language. It was like being released from prison. I saw my cell door swinging open and my mind flying free. That was over 40 years ago, but the picture is as fresh now as if it had just happened.”

I am a linguistic iconoclast. Throughout my life (I am now in my seventh decade), I have heard the mantra that learning a foreign language gives you invaluable insights into the cultures of the people who speak it. I don’t believe it.

In addition to my native English (I grew up in Southern California), I have become fluent in two other languages and have a good working knowledge of three more. I doubt that all this effort has given me any insights into the cultures of the people who speak these languages. At least no insights that I couldn’t have acquired more easily in 30 – 60 minutes by reading a well-written essay or in a few hours by attending well-crafted social-cultural lectures.

By contrast, I have acquired a deeper understanding of science.

What does science have to do with language? Actually, very little. But it has a lot to do with flexible thinking. And this is where science and language learning converge.

Contrary to the common belief, science is not about certainty but rather uncertainty. Good scientists are always looking for what has been overlooked, i.e. they are always searching for surprises and welcome them when they happen. They know that moment we believe a phenomenon is “natural” and must be that way, or that it is “unnatural” and cannot be that way, we are either heading for trouble or missing out on something important.

For example, Albert Einstein investigated the “unnatural” belief that a beam of light in space must always have the same velocity; other scientists had spent decades trying to disprove this. He wanted to see where this “unnatural” might lead. In fact, it lead to e = mc², the formula for atomic energy, and transformed the world.

It is not necessary to be a genius like Einstein (who spoke German, French, Italian and English), or even a scientist at all, in order to profit from the mind-stretching benefits of learning foreign languages. In our daily lives we all make assumptions about how the world works; often we are not even aware that we are making them. And that’s the danger. If we are insensitive to our assumptions, we are almost certain to end up believing things that aren’t true and refusing to believe things that are true.

Learning languages can help correct this parlous state of affairs. How? Quite simply, because nowhere else are our assumptions more rapidly and forcefully challenged by other assumptions about what is or isn’t natural that are equally valid.

Here are some simple examples.

1; Trailing Adjectives

It is “natural” to put adjectives before a noun, e.g. “an unidentified flying object”. Well not really. Many languages put adjectives after the noun, e.g. “un objet volant non-identifie”. You could argue the “naturalness” of these conflicting practices both ways. In English, we prefer to describe something before identifying what it is, as if to build up the suspense. In French, they prefer to identify what it is first and describe it afterwards. Who is right?

2. Optional Pronouns

English speakers take it for granted that constructing a sentence requires a subject and a verb. The subject can be either a proper noun (John talks) or a pronoun (He talks). If you have any acquaintance with Spanish, you know that in this language the pronoun is usually not necessary. You would still say “Juan habla” (John talks); however, in most cases you would simply say “Habla” for “He talks”. In fact, if you use a pronoun where it isn’t required (“El habla”), you would be committing a serious error.

3. No Distinction between Male and Female

English speakers learning French are often puzzled by the language’s apparent inability to distinguish between male and female. For example, “This is his book” and “This is her book” in French are both “C’est son livre”. The possessive adjective “son” means both “his” and “her”. If it is absolutely necessary to distinguish between “his” book and “her” book, there is a way of doing so. However, it is employed only when absolutely necessary.

But isn’t it always absolutely necessary? It seems so unnatural not to specify whether the book’s owner is male or female. Isn’t this fundamental information?

It may seem so, but it isn’t. By the same logic, it should be fundamental information to distinguish between male and female when saying “This is their book”, but we don’t. “This is your book” can be either male, female, or both, but we never specify. Even “This is my book” can be either male or female, but again we don’t specify.

Having grown up speaking only English, you probably have never noticed this inconsistency in the language. Neither had I. I simply knew that is was “natural” to distinguish between his and her book, until a Frenchman asked me why. I couldn’t tell him.

4. Inclusive and Explicit Forms of “You”

In English, we have only one way of saying “you”, which covers all situations. Many languages have several ways of saying it, notably the “formal you” and the “familiar you”. English used to have a familiar “you” (thou), but it has essentially disappeared. But in French and Spanish, for example, it is still widely used, making speakers of these languages feel that English is somehow “incomplete”.

Spanish speakers are particularly poorly served. In their language, not only do they have a formal and familiar “you”, they have them both in the singular and plural. In other words, in Spanish there are four ways of saying “you”: formal singular (one person), familiar singular (one person), formal plural (several persons), familiar plural (several persons). For Spanish speakers, having these four options is natural and necessary; not having them in English is unnatural and constricting.

5. Exclusive and Explicit Verb Forms

English has very few verb forms. For example, in the present tense we say “I cook”, “You cook”, “He cooks”, “She cooks”, “We cook”, “They cook”. In other words, there are only two forms of the verb, “cook” and “cooks”, depending on whom we are talking about. In the past tense English has only one verb form, e.g. “I cooked”, “You cooked”, “He cooked”, “She cooked”, “We cooked”, “They cooked”. Likewise in the future tense; everyone “will cook”.

In other languages this is quite unnatural, because they use distinct forms for each different person being talked about. For example, in French and Spanish “I” is associated with one verb form, “you” with a distinctly different verb form, “we” with yet another form, etc. And of course there are distinct verb forms for the “familiar you” and “formal you” (singular in French, and both singular and plural in Spanish).

But doesn’t all these differences make other languages significantly more complex than English? Yes, indeed. However, they also make them significantly more precise. For speakers of these languages, it is crucially important to make these distinctions, because this is how their minds have been trained to work. Just as it is crucially important for English speakers to distinguish between “his” and “hers”, because this is how our minds have been trained to work.

Examples of these different ways of doing things from one language to another are endless. Each time we encounter them our mind opens up a little bit more, because the unexpressed assumptions we all carry around with us are continually being challenged.

Growing up in California, I used to be strongly opposed to language learning because it seemed so difficult and pointless. I have since changed my mind. I now strongly advocate language learning. Not because knowing a foreign language teaches us very much about others, but because it teaches us so much about ourselves.

Accepting that language learning is more about mind expansion than culture implies that language teaching must be fundamentally reformed.

I live in Belgium, where speaking two or three languages is the norm rather than the exception. This is generally true throughout Europe. In these countries, teaching languages in the belief that people will actually use them makes sense. The mind-expanding aspects of the effort come along as a welcomed bonus.

However for English speakers in general, and Americans in particular, it is almost impossible to learn to speak foreign languages because it is so difficult to practice them outside of the classroom. Here, the mind-expanding aspects of language learning should be the primary objective, and courses designed and taught in consequence.

If this were done, I believe that the American fear – and dare I say loathing – of other languages could be reversed. The schools would lay down the foundations of a language without trying to force students into the hopeless and demoralizing task of trying to speak it.

With this foundation firmly in place, when a person traveled to an area where that language is spoken, he would be able to rapidly turn his passive knowledge into active use. Even better, even if he traveled to an area with a totally different language, he would understand how languages work and therefore be ready to learn the new language rapidly and without fear.

Finally, the general aversion – and again dare I say loathing – many monolingual English speakers have of science and technology might also moderate. A mind made flexible by language learning would find it much easier to grasp and appreciate scientific principles than one still imprisoned in single-language rigidity.

In an age dominated by science and technology, surely this would be a benefit of ineffable importance.
