Best place to Learn Spanish In Latin America?

I’m a teacher looking to hone my Conversational Spanish over the summer and I’d like some input from experienced travelers on cities (and even language schools) to look at. My fiancée would be travelling with me and we’d like to avoid Mexico as she lived there for much of her life and we’ve traveled in that county a good bit over the last few years. Also Spain (or at least Madrid as she lived there for part of her life also) is somewhere we’d like to avoid. A location with some history, either colonial or pre-colombian, would be great. My fiancée would love to be near the beach, and obviously we’d like somewhere safe. We’ve kicked around the idea of the Dominican Republic; Cartagena, Colombia; or maybe even Equador. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer.

I would HIGHLY recommend Quito, Ecuador after spending six weeks in language school there last summer. Interestingly enough, I too had travelled to Mexico multiple times before finally deciding to broaden my horizons by going to a new country. I have no regrets! Quito’s colonial section was named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, and the the beautiful Mount Pichincha right next to the city makes the area quite scenic. You will also be in a capital city, meaning you will be in an area with cultural and political importance to the country you are visiting. Quito is also a nice medium size city that is big enough to have plenty of offer but no so large as to be overwhelming. The high altitude means the climate will be moderate, with cool mornings and evenings and a warm midday. Near Quito, you can even take a visit to the Equator! The Spanish spoken in Quito is quite clear, and the accent did not seem difficult to me as someone very accustomed to Mexican Spanish. You might find it clearer than a Caribbean accent. I did not get to much of the rest of the country, but from I understand Ecuador has much to offer in other parts of the country too if you have time and money to travel around it. You have jungle wilderness in the interior, more history and tradition down in the city of Cuenca, the beach over near Guayaquil, and of course the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands. Granted, you may not have large amerindian pyramids here, but on most other counts you have a little bit of everything right in this beautiful little country!

The most important lingua francas of our civilization are Latin and English These two main languages have influenced legal systems all over the world.

I have spent many years writing the first bilingual legal dictionary in Nicaragua, and probably in Central America. This dictionary is a useful reference in Spanish and English speaking countries, particularly to lawyers, investors, managers, translators, diplomats, students, etc. in today´s globalized world. The Work contains over 44,000 legal terms and phrases in both languages, including terms used in Latin America.

Globalization has brought me legal documents written in English from all over the world for 26 years. These documents may come from Russia, China, Europe, Taiwan, USA, Australia, etc. Obviously, there are differences in meanings in the different legal systems. Yet, globalization forces us to seek the best and most appropriate terms and phrases to perfect legal documents.

Specialized dictionaries written in Spain do not contain some of the terms used in Latin America. These dictionaries usually do not take into consideration the influence of legal terms used by Hispanics in New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, California, New York, etc. Latin American Spanish borrows many terms used in US Hispanic communities. My dictionary includes new terms and it is a contribution to improve international communication: the word stock includes some financial, economic, accounting, banking, and business terms relating to law.

Today’s lingua franca among the different regions of the world is English. Thera are 800 million people speaking English as a foreign language. English will continue influencing legal matters in two or three centuries. In spite of climate change or an asteroid hitting the earth, the English language will still be used in future space stations, lunar or Martian colonies, etc.

It’s for my Spanish II homework. I have a list of about 100 words that are in Spanish that I have to look up what they mean then give their antonym. Please let me know. I’ve looked on various Spanish/English dictionary sites but none have also let me see the antonym.

All you have to do is take one of those words, assuming you’ve already translated them. If not, go to a Spanish Translator and translate each individual word.

Once you have a word, like, “frio,” which means “cold,” look up “cold” in an English dictionary to get English antonyms. In this case, “hot” would be included.

Then, go back to the translator, enter “hot,” and you get: “caliente”

Do that for each individual word. Once you know the meaning, figure out the opposite and translate that word into Spanish.
